Head shots with the tranquilizer darts take people down twice as fast. Since the basic NSF grunts you encounter early in the game have low health to begin with, they will usually go down instantly if you shoot them in the head with a tranquilizer dart.
The reason why the stealth pistol does not usually kill people with one shot to the head is because the stealth pistol is an incredibly weak weapon. Its base damage is 8 (as opposed to 14 for the regular pistol). It is so weak that I won't even use it unless I am in the mood to play the game only with silenced weapons. It is generally easier to just make sure that no one except for the person you are shooting at is within 50 feet of you and just use the regular pistol instead. No one will hear it except for the soon to be corpse so it is effectively as good as a silenced weapon.

huh? well the usual thing didn't happen with me :D they like never went down instantly with it appart from the chair guard when freeing gunther.
oh and i thought that the norm pistol base damage was 7 and the silenced one 6????

I don't know about later releases of Deus Ex but in the original version the normal pistol has 14 base damage and the stealth pistol has 8 base damage.
Now that I think about it, it may take two hits of poison to take down an NSF terrorist with a head shot. The shot to the head makes them run (without even trying to shoot at you) and the next hit of poison takes them down. I do believe that master level with pistols will cause and NSF terrorist to go down right away with a head shot with the tranquilizer gun.

someone care to explain how more skill points magically make the same tranq darts more deadly?
Alias on 27/6/2003 at 16:02
If you are looking for a logical reason why more skill means more damage, the only thing that comes to mind is that maybe the extra damage is caused by increased accuracy. When you get more skill, you can hit on target with more ease and so it is easier to shoot that dart into major blood vessels so the drug quickly gets to the brain and causes the person to pass out.

Erm, what files are these exactly? All I can think of now are the ones in the former NSF HQ, after Paul sends you there. You mean them?
Rolander on 2/7/2003 at 18:51
I also couldn't find Paul's report until my first game with the Plasma Rifle (I enjoy going head-to-head with you-know-who with Plasma blazing and LAMs tossing on both sides; UTTER CHAOS).
I am playing the GOTY version BTW, though I trust there should be little changes ...
In the room with the datacube with the password for the antennas, jump around and look on TOP of the equipment around the place ...
