I recently got Deus Ex GOTY and it is v good, naturally :)
Although there are some things which annoy me in the game. Like when you tranquilise someone it takes them like 10 million years to pass out, and sometime they don't even pass out. Also, in this period they set off the alarm and automatically know where you are, even if you are well hidden. Silent Takedown my arse.
There is an annoying bug on the subway station aswell, when you walk up to the hostages, while crouching, it repeatedly crouches and uncroutches, meaning the terrorists hear you. For some reason I cannot tell the hostages to discreetly run onto the train like a i did before, meaning i have to take out all the terrorists and disabling my stealth approach, which is quite annoying. Is there any way around this, and how can i get the hostage to talk to me (it says former hostage, but i still haven't completed the objective?!).
Basically, the AI is rather crap and the game a bit buggy. Apart from that it rocks. WIthout using a stealth approach though, it feels unorganised an unrewarding.

Well there are ways you can tranquilise them quicker...aim for the head and put more skill points into your pistol ability, and they'll go down in a few seconds. The tranquilisers are also a poor choice for silent takedowns...use the riot prod or the baton if you want silence.

My problem here is that usually JC stands up to talk, as he doesn't seem to be bale to talk while crouching...
My technique (which I'm sure is the same for a lot of people here) is to carefully time the moment when I get out of the ventilation shaft to talk to the hostages. You have to wait 'til the terrorists are gone on patrol. Then you stand up behind the pillar and there you'll be able to have the convo with the hostages without alerting the guards. After that, you quickly go to the door and open it, then run/crouch back into the shaft.
Sometimes, to make sure you make it in time, you may artificially end the conversation by clicking repeatedly until it's over.

Actualy by the standards of real tranquilizer darts the ones in Deus Ex are very very fast (and reliable).
ahh this seems a good time to bring up the tranq dart headshot thing. Ive heard many people here say it but it seems kinda weird.
If you look at an enemy with lvl 3 targeting aug you can see that the tranq does damage to their toro every second or two and they become Unconsious whenever their toro health reaches 0 (from tranq damage). So i concluded it was best to shoot them in the toro to get a headstart with the 10 points or so of damage the dart itself does...Does the poison work faster with headshots or something? :weird:
Hehe if you feel like exploiting the gameworld a little you can shoot someone with a tranq and then quickly shoot him once in the chest with your stealth pistol, he will go down faster and it will still count as a knockout  :ebil:

or you could do what I do, and just blow their brains out. :sly:

Thanks for the help guys. I was forced to start again so I played on realistic - which will hopefully make things more fun :) anyway, at first I thought the riot prod was crap, as it took like 3 hits to work, but then I stumbled across the fact that if you shock em in the bottom of the legs they go down in one. The baton seems hit and miss though, but usually they don't go unconsious, and it takes like 3 hits and they run off/or shoot you. The leg thing may work here too? dunno, aint tried it. The elec prod and baton don't work well with the guy in the chair, so I decided to try the crossbow. Surprise suprise it worked, Down straight away in one shot. I was amazed I can tell you. Maybe it was only this guy it works on cos he was sitting in a chair, or maybe its cos i was really close to him, the range. But it shouldn't be the range as that wouldn't affect the anicethetic, but it could be a wrong thjing in the game (like how they automatically know where you are when you shoot em with it).
The station thing was actaully a bug, but thanks for the info of not being able to talk when crouched. What happened, was when I moved into a certain area (notabley the platform slope by the hostages, but on the flat near them aswell) it kept rapidly crouching and uncrouching (so you are really loud, and walking noramlly doesn't help) cos I was crouched. This ruined it, cos it is like the only way to get to them without being spotted. oh well, I'll try again now.
Anywayz, cheers, Dan Knott

Is this something that I've missed? That on harder difficulty levels the enemies are harder to take down? I've played the game either on normal or hard, and then it always took just one shot with a baton or prod to take them out. I mean, it sounds like many people dissing non-lethal takedown have problems with these weapons, so could the problem be with difficult settings and these weapons?
Sitting guys are easy to take out with a prod. Just aim between their shoulder blades and they go down instantly:D It takes practice, though, so since you strated again, try to find someone sitting and use quicksave option to learn it. Peace of cake afterwards.

Oh yer, I never said why I was forced to start again, but I guess you can work it out - I deleted my save accidentally :D
Anyway, the difficulty doesn't effect enemy damage at all. All it does is effect the damage that ou take. A strange thing is that if you shoot someone in the head with the stealth pistol they aren't kiiled usually.
Anyway, I have done the ambrosia barrel bit now and am off to the subway :) It was easy, thief syleee. I only had to riot prod one guard, the safe key one. I also opened up the non secret way (where you press the button and access it normally with the 666 code) to get skill points and talked to the boy (droppping my soy food first so he only got the choc bars, hehe) to get more skill points. Good way to get more skill point randomly there, but make sure you keep crouched so you don't alert the main entrance guards. I guess the baton works best between the shoulder blades, but I think it may be hit and miss.
Also, why in multiplayer is the sniper rifle only good for headshots when using the scope (ie why is it 3* damamge when using the scope) cos this makes it crap and means you can't snipe by eye, as it won't kill em unless you use the scope. Anyway, thats it for now, cya :)
Oh and about the skin topic, I use the Tanned, Brown hair one, cos although I ain't tanned, I have brown hair (it is brown hair bw, look closely)
Cheers, Dan Knott

Riot prod AND electric prod????
Are there 2 prods? I've only ever seen (used) 1.
inselaffe on 18/6/2003 at 14:20
Sorry, because the riot prod was electric, I thought it was called the electric prod for some reason, and I thought the baton was the riot prod cos batons are like used in riots. My bad, sorry for the confusion - I have corrected my posts now and made one part clearer too. hope thats of help. BTW, the hostage thing worked this time. I guess the game is just rather buggy :p
