I understand that a wedding is a
very serious matter for the bride but its not in the same league as the Beethoven example.
Cosmic irony is not defined by how serious or how pathetic the situation is. It is only defined by a difference between how someone expect things to be and how they really are because of what could be viewed as some twisted sense of humour from the gods (or from destiny, or fate, call it however you want).
Someone losing his hearing is not irony, but Beethoven losing his hearing is irony because : why on earth was it
this man who lose his hearing and not another one?
Rain on your wedding day is not irony if you decide to get married during the rainy season in some tropical countries. But rain on your wedding day when all other days for the past two weeks had a bright sunshine is irony because : why on earth was it raining
this day and not another one?
If you go to a wedding and it is raining, and if the next day you go to a funeral and there is a bright sunshine, is pretty much the best example of cosmic irony you can find. Of course, for cultures were a funeral is a joyful event (because the dead is now in heaven), it is not irony at all.
