...and man does it
(http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/ironman/) SUCK. Seriously, this is one of the worst trailers I've ever seen. It's almost like they're
trying to make the film flop.
I love Downey- he was fantastic in (
http://imdb.com/title/tt0373469/) 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' (do whatever you have to do to see this- it's fucking
hilarious)- but he is completely unsuited for this role. This looks like one of the worst examples of miscasting since
Cage in 'Ghost Rider' Affleck in 'Daredevil'. Add to this the usual blatant and maladroit Hollywood attempt at 'political relevance' and you have something that looks like an early contender for flop of the year.

Another awful casting choice (IMO) I saw recently was Al Pacino to play Dali.
But I think this has it beat.

I dunno. I thought it sounded pretty cool. Still do actually, but this trailer isn't the best. Black Sabbath makes it seem like a joke. Stark as a smarmy git before the accident makes sense but doesn't win too many fans I guess.
Oh well. It's not out for ages. Maybe we'll see something better in a while.

Somebody in this thread apparently knows very little about the history of the character if they think Downey's a bad choice for Tony Stark.
I'm actually more excited for this than I am about The Dark Knight

Whoever thinks Downey's a bad choice for Stark knows nothing of the character. Downey was fucking born to play that role.

I've not read Iron Man since I don't know when (and for some reason I remember him being black) so I've no idea about this casting. But the trailer looked alright to me and the hashed together look of the suit in many shots was nice and gritty. I wasn't interested in this. Now I am.

There was a black Iron Man for a while. Stark relapsed into alcoholism after losing Stark Industries to Obadiah Stane and he was ultimately forced to step down as Iron Man to recuperate and get his shit together. So Jim Rhodes (Stark's personal pilot etc etc) stepped up to maintain the Iron Man presence. Of course, the suit being calibrated for Stark meant that Rhodes became increasingly irrational and paranoid etc lalalala
I think that's how it went. I haven't read comic books in years :(
Um.
So yeah. There was a black Iron Man for a while.

Aha! I was right all along! People told me I was TRIPPING man. Still, no bearing on the film. Too many comic book films to see and not enough free weekends...

Apparently they have cast someone for Jim Rhodes. I forget who, and there's no indication that the character will be anything but Stark's pilot / associate, but the character is supposedly written in... and it would be a shame if they didn't at least touch on the Understudy Iron Man idea. Even as an implied sequel premise or something. Who knows?
One of the other tricky bits about it (in the comics at least) is that when Stark outed himself as Iron Man he accidentally lost the exclusive rights to the armor. Something about there being a provision that the armor would be worn by an employee of Stark's... not Stark himself. But yeah, I'm going way off-track here.
