It was pretty excellent as far as superhero movies go, even if the last act isn't as good as the preceding bits. The last scene almost made up for it though.

I saw a trailer today while passing by a cinema - or to be exact, that bit with... yes, you've guessed it: Arabs. Sigh.
Scots Taffer on 1/5/2008 at 23:34
Marecki, what the fuck, the trailer contains Arabs so it's somehow a bad movie? It's a contemporary action where we currently are still at war in the Middle East and by trhe end of the movie American arms dealers are just as bad as any Arab dudes.
And for a bit of a more involved review: Iron Man is the most fun I think I've had with a comic/super-hero movie since Spiderman 2 and it comes close to being one of the very best ever made (up there with Batman Begins). Great script, well paced, good balance between action, humour and character building. Perfect casting all round. Downey is the fucking man. Who knew Paltrow got hot? CG was pretty damn near flawless too.
I must say, I'm not getting the criticisms levelled at the third act, in my opinion it didn't suffer from that very ordinary issue of here's a villain we've dreamt up just to give you a big action sequence, it was all very organic, and in the last act you had two big robots knocking fuck out of each other showing Bay how Transformers should have been done. The very last scene is pretty fucking  though.

I'm hopeful about this (going tonight) but did I hear someone say they've still managed to shove the Black Fucking Sabbath song in there like the dick of a 400lb prison inmate up the ass of a scrawny white accountant who's been busted for tax fraud? (Yeah, I know - that's like the third anal rape reference in my posts this week. We're paying $3.65 for gas over here and it's on my mind a lot lately).
Why? WHY does Hollywood insist on slopping classic songs together with movie characters that have absolutely no relationship with one another? WHY?

All in all, the reviews still lean towards Iron Man being a worthwhile movie-going experience. Yeah, I'm still hoping to catch it tonight after work.

It's a badass song for a badass character, chill the fuck out holmes.

Except that he's right, if the trailer's cringe-inducing introduction of the song is any indication.

They don't play it during the film, it's only over the credits. Regarding it's use in the trailer though I think, considering the tone of the film and the kind of people involved, that it is also supposed to be cheesy in a humorous way. Sure you can take it on the level "It's a badass song for a badass character", and I'm sure they were going for that as well, but I think that Favreau and co knew that some people might have a bit of a laugh at it. For me that was the deciding moment in the trailer. It made me think that 'Iron Man' was going to be much more self aware, type of comic-book adaptation. It really got the balance right between a serious adaptation and a tongue-in-cheek one, never going into outright parody.
It is interesting to note that the song 'Iron Man' had been retconned into the 'Iron Man' universe as Tony Stark's favourite song, hence the name. So while it was not part of the original Iron Man it has been part of the comic for a while so you can't blame Hollywood for that one.
On an unrelated note here's an interview with Favreau:

His attitude about special effects is spot on. He really understands when and how to use the CG. I really hope he gets to make those sequels. He apparently had a trilogy planned and the subsequent films would deal with Stark's acoholism, Howard becoming 'War Machine' and in the villian role Iron Man's greatest foe 'The Mandarin'. Sounds great to me!

As someone who only has only the most rudimentary knowledge about the character, I enjoyed this movie so much. I was happy throughout and after. I may be easily pleased, but I thought Downey was cast entirely spot on. And I really felt that sense of wonder over engineering, but that may be due to me being naturally geekish. Other than that, there were plenty of thrills and laughs. And a couple of fun twists.
BTW, is including AC/DC less of an outrage than Sabbath?
Me, I just went whee! when Stark said "Don't turn down my music!" while ST's Institutionalized was squelched. Heh.
And while speaking of GH songs: Cochise dominated the trailer, but wasn't in the film. The score, by the way, I found really impressive. Orchestrated metal riffs. I suspect the composer was inspired by S&M, No Leaf Clover in particular.
