The first "official" rule of the Iron Man playstyle is:
1) All objectives must be completed.
How would you interpret that? That you have to complete all objectives listed on the objectives screen including optional ones, or all objectives available in the mission?
So if for instance unknown to the player there is a secret objective available in the mission but they do not find it, they may think they have Iron Manned the level but haven't?
This was prompted by Iron Manning Strange Bedfellows, because I know that if you attack a bugbeast you then get a new objective to take down all bugbeasts, and so I avoided attacking any to make my life easier.
Note this is only a half-serious thread. I am happy enough with my own version of Iron Manning where "all objectives" means "all given objectives" rather than "all available objectives", but did wonder what other Iron Manners did about secret objectives.

I has been a while, but I think I did all the secret and optional objectives. I think it's in the spirit of the challenge, but, as far as I'm concerned, it's up to you, really.

I think it's safe to interpret things that hidden, optional or bonus objectives are not required for iron man. Primarily because you would have to either read a spoiler-filled walkthrough or open the mission in the editor to know of their existence if you didn't before hand. That argument might be a bit more in a grey area if, as you did here, you know they exist and intentionally avoid triggering them to make the iron man easier. But as Starker said, in the end it's really just up to you.
