In-depth interview with an engine developer on Ion Maiden, fascinating if you want to hear about how they're bringing at 20+ year old sprite engine into the modern age (basically they're using Eduke32 source port). Also hear from the current 3D Realms owner Frederik Schreiber about the direction that they're taking the company to stand out in the current game developer landscape.

The cautionary virtue signalling is unneeded. People who do moral grandstanding on social media don't actually buy games (or comics, shout out to #MoveTheNeedle). There's no need to pander to those identity politics muppets.
Quote:
"The first concepts of Shelly were drawn in 1997, and had a heavy emphasis on sexualization, which was not uncomon the mid-nineties, although a bit embarrasing looking back with 2018 glasses;"
" The design was slightly more stylized, but still with a heavy emphasis on sexualization."
" This was still the late '90s, with an over-the-top emphasis on sexualization (How far we've come!)."
"This iteration was way less sexualized, with a more tactical look:"
"In terms of her design, we had decided to take her in a completely new direction. We wanted to scrap the emphasis on sexualization, and instead create something brand new."

Those old designs were pretty damn cheesy though.

Cheesy as they were, at least they didn't look like Mass Effect extras. I guess it doesn't really matter for an oldschool FPS but the final character design is incredibly generic.

That's pretty bizarre claim to make on this forum.

Do we do a lot of moral grandstanding here?

Unless one of you is a writer for the likes of Polygon, Kotaku or Vice Waypoint, probably not.

BTW, this is one of the designs that the "identity politics muppets" ruined with their criticism:

Yeah... I'll take the pandering version.

I played the demo campaign a few weeks back and was impressed. If the quality of the full release is anything similar then it'll be easy to recommend when it comes out. My only gripe was with performance, as most of the time it felt like the engine was struggling to stay at or above 60 fps. I didn't actually check, but it felt that way.
