I've tried a couple of versions of the high-definition texture pack, but both cause the same problem: Anything that is supposed to use the new textures shows up in the game as an untextured blank light brown model Any idea what might help with this problem?

Make sure that you've chosen the current version of the game from John P's installer.

Ah, that helped. Seems like it all hinged on choosing UK English instead of US. Thank you!
