Oblivion runs very smoothly for me most of the time, with 4xAA, bloom and draw distance set to maximum. However, whenever I encounter any invisible or chameleoned creature the game slows down to a miserable crawl. Anyone else get this? Incidently, I am using a P4 3ghz + 9800 pro + 1 gig ram.

I got that until I turned AA off.

Same here. Turn off AA and it works fine. I also got similar choppiness with some other spells, which also seems to be gone now that I turned AA off. (This with ATI AIW 9800 Pro 128MB w/ Catalyst 5.3, AMD AV3000+, 1.5GB RAM, SB Audigy 2.)

I thought FSAA didn't even work with bloom/HDR on?

It works with bloom, but not HDR.

AA Doesn't work with HDR turned on - though, the X1900/X1800 radeon's MAY be able to do both together, not sure. No such restriction on bloom though.

And check this page:
(
http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_8.html)
Specifically this ini tweak:
"bUseRefractionShader=1 - This setting controls the shimmery/invisibility effect. Setting it to 0 can noticeably boost FPS in areas where this effect is used, such as around invisible characters, or at an Oblivion gate. Note in particular that ATI users who have major problems in such areas in particular should set this to 0."

Cheers all. I turned off AA and everything is ok now. Hopefully a forthcoming patch may remedy the situation somewhat, but if not, no big deal really.

Turning of refractions makes a lot of particle effects become complelty black. The mythic dawn people gets surrounded by a black ball instead of the blurry effect for one example. And spells have small black rings flying around.

ya the refraction effects+ AA spells big trouble for me as well. I was running perfectly smooth with AA on until the mythic dawn attacked, the second one of them died my fps went from 30-40 to .3.
