Oh god you discovered Frank Miller's awful Batman comic. It is atrociously bad.

Dethtoll, out of curiosity, why do you hate Marvel and what makes DC better?

Batman and Robin: The Boy Wonder is one of the best books on the goddamn shelves and no-one will convince me differently.

EvaUnit02: are you looking for superhero comics explicitly or anything in graphic novel form? I know the original post called out Sandman and there's been a mention of Y the Last Man and Preacher, but so far conversation has focused pretty directly on the BIFF! POW! SOCK! side of the spectrum.
There's a pretty wide range of stuff out there if you're open, from pulp fiction to fantasy to confessional autobiography.

I'm open to anything.
I'll probably be mining through the Vertigo label stuff soon, from the big name authors.

It's the "Troll 2" equivalent of comics, that's obvious.
I am fully convinced that Frank Miller turned everything up to 11 just to see what he could get away with.

Personally I loved
Blankets, but that one may be too touchy feely indie for most of the people here. If you don't mind the idea of a thoughtful teen romance memoir,
Blankets is about the best you can get in the genre.
Stitch on 31/8/2009 at 18:17
Blankets is the best graphic novel I have ever read, and one of the few that truly earns the "novel" part of the label (as opposed to being a collection of serialized comics).
