I must throw my full support behind all recommendations of Hellboy and B.P.R.D.
Also second all of Iggles's recs. Before you read Morrison's Batman run, you might want to read the 'Black Casebook' collection he compiled, as that contains most of the old school Batman stories that informed everything he did with Batman over his entire run leading up to R.I.P.
Warren Ellis's 'Planetary' is a must read (the final issue finally comes out in October), as is Global Frequency. Also: Fell, Ministry of Space, and Ocean. His stuff published through Avatar might break your brain, but a good starting point is Anna Mercury, and/or anything with the Apparat logo. He also did the Extremis arc of Invincible Iron Man. Read that, then read Matt Fraction's Iron Man run. Speaking of Fraction: The Five Fists of Science. You may have some trouble getting a copy, since it's been out of print for a while, but it's a really fun read.
I can't remember what your stance on Kieron Gillen is, but Phonogram is well worth reading. 'Rue Britannia' is available collected, 'The Singles Club' is still ongoing.

Do not read
Y the Last Man, unless you want to invest time and energy into a series that ends horribly.
Do you mean "horribly" in the sense of "in a sad way", or do you think that the series, the writing or the story, get really bad towards the end?
Since people mentioned
Preacher earlier on: IMO it's a series that starts out great but then, after a couple of volumes, gets worse and worse, turning into a smug, borderline reactionary story coasting on superficial coolness and the strength of its setup. While there are still great moments later on, much of it feels like cheapo fan service, at least to me.

There was one book that reportedly caused controversy last year, where a Captain America-esque hero kills the US President in the first scene? Was that any good?

'Black Summer' by Warren Ellis. Falls under the 'brain-breaking' subset of his Avatar work, and yes, it's very good.

Out of curiosity, since I've heard opinions either way, what's everybody's thoughts on 52?

Was Infinite Crisis as dumb as it sounds? I.e. Superboy Prime punching a wall to create parallel universes. What about Spider-man: One More Day?

I haven't read either of them, but the general reaction to One More day was that it sucked balls. And when you think about it, Spiderman throwing away a basically happy marriage via a deal with the devil because he can't deal with ancient Aunt May dying is phenomenally stupid, and quite creepy.
