All superhero comics are shit.
Well, except Nextwave, but that's because it's a parody.
But other than that, don't bother. Seriously.

I've been having a blast while reading (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empowered) Empowered. I totally recommend it for a dose of sarcasm, wit and plenty of laughs.

Transmetropolitan. Read it. I read it again last year (aka an election year) and it was very, very trippy. That trippiness is why I'm not reading it again this year.
Also very highly recommend the Batman stories The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. And while Frank Miller is a hack, Dark Knight Returns is one of his few moments of true glory.
I would also recommend Y: The Last Man and The Walking Dead.
Hellboy is great, make sure you pick up the BPRD stories too as they're also good.

Definitely Y: The Last Man. One of the best I've read in ages.
What I've read of Fables has been pretty excellent.
The Walking dead is very good, but also completely unforgiving. The writer makes sure you like the characters before he does horrible, horrible things to them.
I'll second everything by Grant Morrison that D'Juhn mentioned. Those are a lot easier to wrap your mind around than Doom Patrol or The Filth, which are also great, but ten times stranger.
For Marvel characters you won't already be sick to death of, try Runaways. I haven't read any of it since Joss Whedon took over, but it what I did read was good times.
And Transmetropolitan. Yes.

Why do I keep forgetting to recommend Y: The Last Man? I have the 2 released deluxe versions on my bookshelf for crying out loud

I have never been able to get into any kind of "hero" comic
Out of interest, which ones have you tried? Any of the ones I've linked to are really good if you haven't read them. I'd direct Koki to them too but really who cares what he thinks

That's a Kirkman staple. He likes to do it in Invincible too.

I have to nay say a little bit. While someone should probably check it out just for what it is, 'The Waking Dead' is exceedingly dull and generally terribly written with some of the flattest characters you'll ever see. They fumbled in balancing the exploitation aspects of the genre with the desire for serious realistic drama, I think because they have no skill at the latter and only feel at home when they embrace the expy completely: throwing in absurd gimickry like tough chicks with swords and psychotic hillbillies to spice things up.
By the time they *ahem* restructure things extensively it was too late for me.
(then again I'm biased).
Has anyone read all of (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therefore_Repent!) 'Therefore Repent!' ? It's a post Rapture drama (all the true believers have ascended. Nothing much seems wrong with the world but it's gotten this weird hopeless atmosphere not unlike
Children of Men which was subtly done) that seemed pretty cool. I read a few chapters in some demo/teaser online that I can't find any more. Wikipedia seems to suggest you can read all of it somewhere (or could at one point)

I'm a pretty big Joss Whedon fan, but his run on
Runaways wasn't very good. Brian K. Vaughan's original run, though, is very enjoyable. Another one of his that is very much worthwhile is
Pride of Baghdad.
If you like Whedon's writing, he did a great run on
X-Men.

Do not read Y the Last Man, unless you want to invest time and energy into a series that ends horribly.
