I've been looking at starting to read Western comic books. Other than going the obvious route of all of the famous graphic novels, I was thinking of just picking up one series/franchise for starters.
Maybe starting with the Batman: No Man's Land TPB's or Batman and Son and reading up to Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?
I've read the first volume of Sand Man, that was pretty good.
Not really interested in Marvel TBH, although the Dead Pool character sounds like a lot of fun.

Get into Green Lantern - the Blackest Night story that just started is epic and really well written/drawn.
I'm currently wading through Captain America - which has so far not had a bad issue.
New Batman's are good too now that Bruce Wayne is out of the picture.
If you like "other" books, checkout Hellboy and Unwritten - both very good stuff.
Then there's Old Man Logan as a mini series of old retired Wolverine - but thats not likely to get its conclusion anytime soon.

I thought that Superman: Red Son was an interesting, entertaining and well-crafted "What if?" comic. Worth checking out, if you ask me.
Out of interest: why are you interested in DC but not in Marvel?

In between literally two decades of watching cartoons and films based on Marvel properties, I'm suffering incredible fatigue, especially for X-Men. "ALL OUR CORE HEROES ARE SUFFERING INSIDE", "OH NOES RACISM".
I never grew tired of DC though, because the Paul Dini/Bruce Timm shows were so damn well done.

I f you liked the first Sandman volume, you definitely need to take a look at the other ones. The first is easily the weakest.
I'm not really well wersed in the big two's main franchises. Not big on superheroes, so only check them out when a writer I really like is taking a crack at it. However, if you're going to start digging into the Batman stuff, I'd really recommend Ed brubaker and Greg Rucka's Gotham Central, which is told from the point of view of the cops on the street.
Generally though, it pays to follow creators rather than trademarks. Of currently ongoing long-form series, Brian Wood has two really good ones in Northlanders and DMZ.

I know its daft and not true. But I find DC comics are much more adult and gritty.
Captain America is really the only Marvel I've read alot of. Although I hear good things about the current Dark Reign series going on in that universe.
Try out Hellboy - you wont be disappointed.

I've just finished Preacher which is pretty good. I'm currently following The Walking Dead each month and was also impressed with the first episode of Chew which came free with last months issue. I might start picking that up too.

Most of Alan Moore's comics are very much worth it, especially Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. The two first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are very enjoyable, as is Top Ten.

I'll second the recommendation for Preacher and throw in some Transmetropolitan. Spider Jerusalem is an amazing character.
