I tried using sneak a few times to steal something, but they always notice. The only things I've been able to steal are things in rooms with no other people.
Just since you're supposedly new... you DO know how to sneak and the indicator that shows you when you're not "seen", don't you..? ;)
At first, yes, it's easier to steal things that are in other rooms, but keep practicing stealth and you'll soon be cleaning their pockets.. ;)

This is starting to get pretty addictive!
I knew about sneaking, but I didn't realize what I could do with it... now that i know I've been getting better at it - I stole a sword called the Sword of White Woe (or something) worth 1700 - and it's working much better than the Sparksword I found at the beginning.
-spoilers below-
I met Penmie the trader, who offered me some boots of blinding speed if I helped her - well I was already helping this guy who had his clothes stolen by a witch, so I declined. Turned out that the "witch" was actually a healer, and supposedly a good guy. So I refused to help the naked guy and had to kill him. I was kinda pissed because I wanted those speed boots, until I went back into town and learned that there was a bounty on Penmie's head! So I found her and killed her, turned out the boots were pretty useless after all - speedy, but in fact, blinding - as in you can't see a thing while wearing them! So I sold em and made a decent buck. I dunno of Penmie ever became useful later on (let me know if there are other paths to take with her involved) but the one I chose was certainly satisfiying.
I was up till 5AM last night... this game does not let go - I'm starting to feel like a REAL nerd ;)

The famous Boots of Blinding Speed.... do a search or two and you'll find all sorts of info, including ways of making them work for you (though I've never really gotten any of the tricks I read about to work for me).
As for swords, be wary that you're using the right weapon for your stats.... if that spark-sword you found earlier was a short-blade and you've got a low short-blade score you'll not hit very often till that score comes up (either by training that skill or by leveling it up by using it). I had this problem when I first started, my character had longblade as one of his major or minor skills (so it started pretty high), however I was running around trying to hack people to death with a short blade (which I had a score of like 10.... which I think translates to about a 10% chance of actually hitting something ;) )

That's true for the base game, but if you have the expansions or the GOTY edition then Medium armour is a more atractive option with Gold, Royal Guard and Ice.
Yes, but no Medium armor still has as good a combination of weight, armor rating, and enchantability as Glass (light) or Daedric (heavy). It's like the worst of both worlds - heavier than Light, which adds to encumberance and means you can't run as fast or jump as high, but not as enchantable or as protective as Heavy.

Besides who needs a master trainer? All you have to do is stand there and get battered.
Yeah, but I'm all about the Master Trainers. I don't think I've levelled a skill up simply by useage since the second day I got the game. I'm in too much of a rush to get to a high level.

The Spark Sword was a longblade, as is my new sword of White Woe. Besides, I have longblade as a major and shortblade as a minor.

*goes ppffffttt in Zaphod's general direction*
Numberchaser! Play a role. ;)
(I think I've used a master trainer once, for about 4 levels, and I've got plenty of 100 skills on my characters)

One man's worst of both worlds is another's decent balance, I suppose. You might be right about enchantment, I don't really recall what are the best armours for that. To be honest tho, I seem to recall most of the enchantments I put on Daedric were strength-boosting or feather, just to allow me to actually cart the stuff around.

I'm with Talgor here. Go powergaming in Morrowind and it becomes too easy too quickly - think how much training you can get out of the sale of a single Daedric item. You get far more out of the game just roleplaying. I use trainers a bit here and there but the only time I've ever bothered tracking down a Master is for Enchanting, which goes up painfully slowly through 'normal' use.

My first character happens to be the best template ever, I'm not going to tell any of you about it, because if you don't know, then you're obviously stupider than you should be.
Now then, your template looks pretty cool. Although, I would consider using uhh, the school of magic that effects enchantment, not to enchant things but get more charges out of them.

Actually I found the trick there is recharging magic items with soul-gems..... it counts toward the enchant skill, and it levels the skill up much faster than using enchanted items (and enchanting anything is near impossible without a 100 and a huge boost to your stats).
Like most skills the higher the skill the slower it raises.

My enchant skill is all the way up to eight; and that only because I read some helpful books.
