So I'm trying to explain to a friend of mine (who does not hang out in caustic internet communties) about how one detects sarcasm on the internet. On TTLG, it's usually indicated by typing in all lower cases, TYPING IN ALL CAPS, smilies , or good old fashioned context. But that doesn't seem like a very good answer, and the first two only apply to those rare internet communities where proper grammar is part of the etiquette.
How can an "internet newbie" read sarcasm?
P.S. I'm a total retard and posted this in the wrong forum. Please move to Comm Chat!

I just try to read it by context. I wasn't even aware of the lower case rule.

It's generally identified by having a functioning brain.
Good luck, chief.

Sarcasm? I thought everyone was serious on the internet. Specially around here, where everyone expects you to take everything they say at face value.

Sarcasm, if you act like ZB, you're doing it wrong.

It
is Serious Business.
The thing is, different people will indicate written sarcasm in different ways. There aren't any set rules, so you pretty much just have to spend enough time in any given community to learn the quirks of the posters.

When I'm sarcastic, I use a </sarcasm> close tag. </sarcasm>
