It's a tough question. Though we haven't explored it in depth yet, apparently (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,22.msg7077.html#msg7077) someone has figured out how to make DDFix's texture replacement functionality work with SS2. If this can be made to work reliably, at some point someone is going to have to start an SS2 terrain texture upgrade project. And that project is going to need that rarest of commodities-- graphic artists who are talented, yet willing to suppress their creativity in the name of staying true to the original artwork.

FIIIIIIINE!
No grime, will stay true to the original, honest. Problem is, I need some help.
Someone willing to sell there soul replacing all the textures with mine in the maps. Because making everything hires AND replacing them will take me twice as long and it would zap motivation away pretty fast. :(

Hold that thought. As noted above, there's probably a way to substitute in new high-res terrain textures without modifying the maps, but it hasn't been fully explored yet. The next few months should see some progress on that front.
In the meantime, go find FAM.CRF in your SS2 install folder. Open it up with WinZIP or your unZIPper of choice, and extract everything there into a work folder (be sure to preserve folder names!). Familiarize yourself with these files... they're what you'll be upgrading.
