Hmmm, definately sounds like something is preventing hardware acceleration from initializing. Not sure what it could be now though.
Hmmm.
The drivers for your video card. Were they installed by windows or did you get those off of a website or disk as well?
Karkianman on 25/2/2005 at 04:31
I recently downloaded ati's drivers for my 9700 pro, either the newest version of catalyst or the one before.

hmm... that worked. but then a window popped up. lemme pic it.
EDIT: okay, im using t3 launcher. what should the path look like? because 'C:\Program Files\Thief3 Edit\System\T3.exe editor' isnt working.
is
Unable to load static mesh 'WEPaiSWORD'! supposed to come after a querie for Sound Vocabulary?
Okay the "Path" should only be to the folder called Thief3 or Thief Deadly Shadows itself. Do not put system or t3.exe or anything in the path box. All that is done for you by the program.
For example:
Editor Path: C:\Program Files\Thief - Deadly Shadows - Editor
Thief3 Path: C:\Program Files\Thief - Deadly Shadows
Maybe I'll make another version that gets the installation path from the registry, but not till probably late tommorow.

Fixed the problem.
After reading the error more carefully...and not being put off by all the gook in it. I noticed that at the very bottom of the error, the most pertinent information was listed....
Twas then that I realized I forgot to install my VIA 4 in 1 drivers for the motherboard. Works like a charm now.
I'll take a peek and see what it's like. :)
Hmm  I'm getting exactly the same error as you, but I'm not using a Via chipset motherboard - its intel, and I have all the latest drivers installed and an Nvidia FX5900XT, which plays the game fine, so I don't see why it should give that error.

Sorry for entering the thread so late.
About my texture installers:
I was happy when I saw David advice people to uninstall my texture installers first, before reinstalling the game.
The reason you should do so, is that after a while of making these installers, they became more and more complex, enabling you to install and uninstall single options at will. But to enable this feature, I had to make the installer/uninstaller "remember" what you had installed/uninstalled.
So I had to make registry entries for this.
If you just uninstall the game and reinstall it without uninstalling my textures, that won't interfere with the game itself, but it will mess up an attempt at installing my installers at a later time.
Because the installer(s) will then look to the registry and "think" that you have this and that texture installer installed. This is true particularly for the Garrett ones and the Misc. Pack because they have several options. But I would encourage you to uninstall them all anyway.
For example; if you once installed every option in the Misc. Pack, and you then uninstall the game without uninstalling the Pack, and you then later want to install the Pack, the installer will "think" that it's already installed, and so it will move you directly to the Options page of the installer. And the Options page will then be empty, and you won't be able to install anything. This is because the installer 'thinks' every option is already installed.
Of course, as long as the uninstaller is intact, you can try to use it, but if you reinstalled the game it's probably gone, or the directory has changed and it won't work anyway.
This is all covered in the ReadMe that comes in the Misc. installer, and which is extracted to your game's root directory on installation.
I know uninstalling the packs is a pain due to the slow nature of the install/uninstall procedure, but i would still really recommend it, if you think you'll ever want to install the texture packs again at a later time.
If you've already reinstalled the game, you can also go into the registry and remove the entries there manually. Doing so will also remove the entry in Add/Remove Programs.
Be careful - there are only two main entries for each pack.
For the Misc. Pack, they are:
HKCU "Software\John P.'s Misc. Thief: DS Textures."
HKLM "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\John P.'s Misc. Thief: DS Textures."
As always, I would advice extreme caution when editing your registry, and I can't be held accountable for anything that might go wrong when you edit the registry. This is only meant as a help for those who have already removed the game install/reinstalled the game. If you still have the opportunity to uninstall the texture installer from the Control Panel, you should do so.

Im using the launcher, with the file paths:
C:\Program Files\Thief3 Edit
C:\Program Files\Thief3
the problem is hardware initialization failed. But all my other games run great.

Have you tried the normal directions to see if its the launcher at fault? It doesn't seem to be to me.

I can't actually run maps from the editor or from the command line, everytime I hit the joystick icon it goes to the loading splash screen, and then crashes with a runtime error. Same thing happens with command line.
extra bits of possibly helpful stuff:
Debug box thing says "Warning: Failed to load 'Level None.MyLevel': Failed to find object 'Level None.MyLevel'"
Same here. I have 2 folders:
"D:\Thief3" (renamed from Thief3Edit)
"D:\Thief3game (original thief install, renamed from Thief3)
Helpppp! :erg:

You shouldn't have deleted the maps folder from the editor directory, that causes the error. Back them up from the game directory and enjoy:)
