The fact that they come with uninstallers indicates that there are registry entires.
Not in and of itself, I'd say. From what I see, textures are manually being replaced by opening up ibt files. John P created the installers so we wouldn't have to do this texture by texture ourselves, which is the alternate method. If we can manually replace the files using the Deus Ex 2 texture editor (DXTool), it begs the question of the necessity of using the uninstallers, as that is for the event that
one wanted to continue playing Thief afterwards, and, for the purposes of getting the editor to work, Thief needs to be uninstalled and the installation directory deleted anyway. So I was asking if I couldn't just skip that step, being that it most likely doesn't mess with the registry at all.
Correct me if I'm wrong, of course ;).. If the ISA forums are back up, I'll search for John P.'s thread to see if he gives specifics, though I again seem to remember that this was just an automatic method of replacing textures in the resource files.

Things listed in Add/Remove programs have have registry entires by virtue of appearing in that list. Therefore with the textures appearing in the Add/Remove list, they have registry entries.

Bah, I don't think that's necessarily true ;) Doesn't it usually just mean there's an install log created, conveniently listing what files were places where, furthermore conveniently removed once an uninstaller is ran?

I have made a few high res. textures and gameplay and menu specific textures, and put them into installers that will automatically install them to your Thief: Deadly Shadows game, without any hex editing or the like on your part.
Seems like these installshield and other apps just make it easy for someone to package something, but I don't think that means by necessity that one has to include additions/alterations to the registry in order to use it.
DXTool has an uninstaller. Upon opening up the uninstallation log, it appears anything can appear in the add/remove programs list so long as an entry appears under Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ .. Of course, someone much smarter than me will probably come along and clear all this nonsense up ;)

When you want to use the editor you will need to rename the Thief3 Edit to Thief3 and when you wish to play the game you will need to rename the Thief3 directory back again.
Finally got everything uninstalled and reinstalled. I'm confused about this, though. Above, you instruct to make a copy of the installation directory. I'm assuming to copy everything under "Thief3"? Would I copy this to a folder called "Thief3 Edit" as a child of the main Thief3 directory or not? E.g., I'm using "D:\Games\Thief Series\Thief3" for the main installation. Would I put it under that or under "D:\Games\Thief Series\Thief3 Edit"? If that were the case, I couldn't very well rename this directory to identically match the name of the other.
Yes, I'm just confused with these instructions ;)

Installed everything as per the instructions but I get a strange Victoria error when I try to start up. I've tried this with drac's startup tool and with a shortcut. Here is the error I get.

Did you apply the patch to the game before making a copy for the editor? I first forgot to patch it and got about the same error (though I could see an "Unable to load static mesh 'WEPaiSWORD'!" message, which seems to be missing in your error report).
I deleted the editor folder, patched the game, recopied everything according to David's instructions, and it worked.

Okay if you're using my launcher all you need to do is this:
1. Install Thief3
1a. Patch Thief3
2. Copy->Paste the Thief3 directory into a new directory somewhere called "Thief3Edit" or something along those lines.
3. Extract the editor.zip into the new Thief3Edit directory.
4. Rename T3MainOptVersion.exe to T3Main.exe
5. Start Thief3Launcher and type in the appropriate locations of Thief3 and Thief3Edit
6. Enjoy.
I didn't have to patch mine to make it work but you should anyway.
New Horizon on 24/2/2005 at 21:19
Yup, that's what I did. Exactly as described. I checked and double checked.
I hope the fact that I'm running Server 2003 isn't a problem.
