I didn't have enough disk space to create two installations of T3, so I moved my editing version to another disk. Of course, it didn't work.
So I went to find out why. This may help simplify the issue for others who are trying this.
The path to the Thief 3 directory is kept in the registry in;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ion Storm\Thief - Deadly Shadows]
My system had the key "ION_ROOT" set to "D:\Games\Thief - Deadly Shadows"
I changed that to "F:\Games\Thief3" and the editor now works. (Wow, that thing looks scary at first glance!). I can switch back to the game by simply restoring that "D:\Games..." string.
You could have 2 registry key files set up, and double click either one, and that would do the same thing as MM's batch file. Or you could write a batch file to switch the registry entries.
Now, where do I get a copy of 3DSMax 5.1?....
Great discovery I'll have an app to switch back and forth in a few minutes, brb!

#4 Make a copy of the installation directory and name it <em>Thief3 Edit
This step is a bit unclear. Are we copying the entire Thief3 directory we just installed the game into? That's my understanding, but not so sure.

u need to install thief 3, i.e my installation, d:\games\thief3 then unzip the editor and copy over all the files in the thief 3 directory. Make sure the directory is caled thief3 NOT Thief - Deadly Shadows, delete T3Main and rename the t3mainoptimized to T3Main. create a shortcut and put editor after t3main.exe i.e D:\Games\Thief3\System\T3Main.exe editor

T3ED was not designed to give you the ability to design maps and play the game from the same installation, so you will require two. This document will show you how to create and switch between the two.
Stephen, if you do it your way then you will only be able to make maps but not play the proper full game, according to David's instructions. Copying the root directory and then modifying that copy for the editor will still leave you with an untouched installation for playing the full game and I presume any finished custom maps.

yeah i was refering to two installations, i just call my editor install thief3 and the other thief deadly shadows, strangly enough though, if u don't delete the maps and video textures outlined by david, i can still run the normal game from the editor install by using t3mainrelease.exe.

The nice thing about a separate install is that if you modify the game scripts and such they wont affect your singleplayer game.
The launcher is about done. Just a few minutes so I can upload it.

#1 Uninstall any modifications you have added that appear in the Add/Remove Programs, such as John P's excellent custom textures.
I'm just wondering if it's really necessary to uninstall all these custom add-ons if we're to uninstall and remove the Thief directory anyway. Are there some registry values left over or something? It took a good 5 minutes just to remove the City Guard textures, and I have every one of John P's custom texture sets installed :erg:.
Just wondering if/why that was necessary and if anyone re-installed and configured Thief 3 without doing so and didn't have any problems.

The fact that they come with uninstallers indicates that there are registry entires.
I wrote this tutorial in a hurry back in November, so I don't doubt that there are improvements to be made to it.

Okay, launcher is done, grab it at (
http://www.dracsoft.com/zips/thief3launcher.zip) http://www.dracsoft.com/zips/thief3launcher.zip
Feel free to host this somewhere (ttlg, thecircle, etc...)
For the sake of EXE size I didn't include a "browse for folder" dialog, so just type it in manually. It will save the paths when you exit and load them the next time.
An overview of what this does:
Sets two registry keys: ION_ROOT and GameSysModder to point to the main game path or the editor path, then launches the appropriate EXE with the correct parameters.
