at the end of the command line use -editor not just editor. You need the dash there i believe.

No dash, just a space and then editor.

It's working on my system. The two short cuts both point to Thief3\system\t3.exe:
1. Thief3\system\t3.exe
and
2. Thief3\system\t3.exe editor
I don't need a - before editor, but in the (XP Home) Properties for the shortcuts the Target was in quotes eg "Thief3\system\t3.exe". The quotes had to be deleted to get the system to accept editor on the command line.
MM's batch file works a treat. T3toggle.bat is in the common root folder with a shortcut to it on the desktop.

I didn't have enough disk space to create two installations of T3, so I moved my editing version to another disk. Of course, it didn't work.
So I went to find out why. This may help simplify the issue for others who are trying this.
The path to the Thief 3 directory is kept in the registry in;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ion Storm\Thief - Deadly Shadows]
My system had the key "ION_ROOT" set to "D:\Games\Thief - Deadly Shadows"
I changed that to "F:\Games\Thief3" and the editor now works. (Wow, that thing looks scary at first glance!). I can switch back to the game by simply restoring that "D:\Games..." string.
You could have 2 registry key files set up, and double click either one, and that would do the same thing as MM's batch file. Or you could write a batch file to switch the registry entries.
Now, where do I get a copy of 3DSMax 5.1?....

Thanks very much, Shadowspawn. Exactly what I needed.

I've done all as mentioned above, but I get this error message : "No string tags found for 'T_editorLoadingQuote*'!"

after having to wait another 40 mins to download this huge file, for some reason the editor seems to work now. :)

So the shortcut on the desktop (which was created when the folder was named "Thief3 Edit") won't ever work because it's looking for a directory that doesn't exist,it's been changed to "Thief3" to enable editing.
I haven't done these instructions yet myself, but why not just create more than one shortcut? One that goes to the "Thief3 Edit" dir, one to "Thief3"? I don't see why you can't manually type in a target path...
It does seem strange arbitrarily glancing through this and reading that.. Man,
two installations sounds a bit decadent/excessive to me. Guess I gotta uninstall some games I'm not playing right now :laff:.
Nice to know they provided a few tutorial files though, and these instructions.

When you duplicate the folder, if you delete the files listed by David under step #6 you will save about a gig of space, so it's a lot less than 'another installation'.
