Okay, so I'm messing around learning how to make a skybox and how it works and all that. So I think, "Can you put ANYTHING in there?" - turns out (so far) you can, and it will show up.
Also turns out if you make a wall a "Fake Backdrop" (to show the skybox), you can walk through the wall and fall out of the normal space of your mission, and on top of other parts on the outside! I made a video (FRAPS baby!)
(
http://www.keepofmetalandgold.com/files/T3skybox_divx.zip) (14meg)
The guard (lit up green by a nearby omni light) is walking around on solid ground painted see-through on the underside, easy enough. The skybox is a huge 2000 unit cube with buildings suspended on the upper end, and blue omni's positioned all around.
This is wild - it gives us so much control over the sky! Imagine the possibilities, vast cloudy sunsets, sci fi orbiting platforms with huge slowly rotating moons, you name it!
By the way, the map you're seeing is a sneak peak of my (very unfinished) little tutorial mission. It's looking like I'll be done with it and the tutorial in about a week, maybe two.

Welcome to Unreal.

:D
(I kid, I joke... but that's what you get when you don't explore anything other than Dromed.)

Don't worry Komag, I thought it was pretty cool. Nice video. :D

Don't go too wild with your skybox, because everything in it renders all the time. You could really tank your performance if you add too many polys or shadowcasting lights to it.

Yeah, I figured it would be a tradeoff like that. Probably best to stick with some stars and clouds then, looks good, and almos no hit on performance

Don't forget islands, water, mountains and other assorted niceties. I might put together an airship model or something at some point.

I made a peasant female mostly transparent and suspended her just above the skybox camera facing down. It looked pretty cool to look up at the sky and see a ghostly face looking down, but I deleted it almost immediately. Too freaky deaky! :cheeky: Now I stick to adding emmiters to form constellations relevant to my story line. Sometime I'll see about adding shooting stars.

I tried putting that loot shimmer on top of the lighthouse but it didn't look very good, does anybody have any idea of what would look good? :erg:
