This has been on the net for a while now, an Irish company (
http://www.steorn.net/en/technology.aspx?p=5) claims to have constructed a generator which has an efficiency over 100%, which means in effect they'd be able to produce an infinite amount of energy. They have even put up a challenge to validate their device.
Anyways, this isn't the first time somebody claimed to be able to do this, and I doubt it'll be the last time. Frankly, I think if I read in the papers next month that there is indeed such a wonderous gizmo available, I'd put on my tinfoil hat, crawl into a corner and tremble with fear.
Some people would face loosing a lot of money and power (in more than one sense of the word), and said people wouldn't like that very much. And if you look what damage a finite energy source (like a bomb) can cause, well...
An infinite power source would be able to solve a lot of problems, but somehow, I don't see it happen that way. :/

Welcome to the nanotechnology controversy. Same thing: tenfold increase in power means you can do lots of great things, but can also do lots of very nasty things.
That said, as much as I suspect humans will abuse such technology (be it nanotech or infinite generators), I support it. As far as I can tell, we have the capability to wipe ourselves out as it is (hydrogen bombs + chemical warfare), and we're slowly sliding towards environmental destruction. So we can either A. go back to the stone age (which would be pretty much impossible to engineer), or B. Try to use technology of the future to fix problems of the past and hope no one screws up.
Anyway, we'll know this generator is real when the government or a military group steals it - because if it was real anyone who acquired it would gain immense power (no pun intended).

Ill bet this can be proven by sacred geometry!

No, this has TIMECUBE written all over it! I told you guys TIMECUBE was legit!

I read their press release when it first came out and, judging by the sparse details included, it appears that they've discovered that moving conductors around in a magnetic field generates electricity. I'm fairly sure that there's some prior research on that topic since every freaking power generator in the world uses that. They're really on the cutting edge of 19th century technology there.
They've also conveniently forgotten to factor in the energy expended to cause and maintain the motion of the conductor, hence the "free" energy.
