That's true - I was thinking of the 'gaming' profile I used where everything that I could stop, was stopped. Before you helped me out, Biker, I followed BlackViper's bare bones configuration to try and get a bit more ooomph from my machine. And it did work. I didn't miss print spooler at all but checking the site again, all the different configurations have it as automatic start-up. So perhaps best not to stop the service.
I don't mind messing around trying things to solve a problem but that's me. :)

What's wrong with AVG, exactly?
For one thing, it's a resource hog. For another thing, running an avast! scan immediately after an AVG scan picked up several things that AVG missed.

Not as bad as Norton though and different programmes do pick up different things. Having run out of Trend Micro Professional on this passed-on pc, I'm having a go with AVAST. I don't understand quite a lot of what I should be looking for/at though.
Is there a user-friendly explanation anywhere of the various elements Enchantermon?

Thats not the case anymore, Symantec have cleaned up there act. their AV client is now much slimmer and better and detecting virus's, malware and spyware. I've installed on a few people machine after I have rebuilt them and I was pleasantly surprised.
Atm there are various Anti-Virus programs out there. The best for the home user is kaspersky (which I use and have to pay for), but you can pick it up cheap in OEM form (just the disc no manual or box) for a little as £8 per pc per year.

Well, well. You prompted me to read a review of NIS 2009 at Geeks to Go and they pretty much like it too. A bit of a problem with false positives and some download freezing with the Active Protection on but apart from that, the 5 main issues have all been addressed. I might think about this one for the business pcs, though technical support is apparently somewhat lacking. Any experience of that Biker?
I like Kaspersky and I always use that for an on-line scan.

If your referring to KAV, I have always been able to get through on the phone, they now support all versions of windows from Windows 98 -to- windows 7 and support for linux and even beta support for Mac OSX. Norton also now supports all 4 OS's.

I like Kaspersky too; for some reason I've ended up with both that and AdAware on my computer at once, though.

I was referring to a hastily-read, quick review of Norton somewhere else which said that they do try to push people on to paid technical help rather than free. I should read it again though to be sure of what was said.

Ah ok, kaspersky give you free support - they don't expect you to pay for support when you have already paid for ther product.
