New facebook has a little option for giving a thumbs up (i.e. "Aja likes this") to status updates, posted items, and so on.
I propose something similar for the forums. It would allow people to show appreciation for particular posts without having to post "lol", "good one", "too true" etc. Doesn't have to be flashy or anything, and it would let the top-quality posters know their words aren't going unnoticed, even if no-one has any specific responses (and we save the <3s and stuff for the truly great).

I'm a poster at a forum where they have a LOL function, which - while sounding lame - is actually really cool way to allow users to tag something for other people's attention without bloating a thread full of nothing replies.

That's pretty much what I'm asking for, except "LOL" is kind of limiting if the post is good for reasons other than humour. I need to be able to compliment RBJ's iron-clad ten-page edicts alongside Piglick's two-word wang jokes.

Sure, I knew what you meant - was just offering an example of something like that which works.

And a fine job you did. Now if only there was some way of commending you...

vBulletin has a reputation system built into it, where you can vote posts by users up or down and users get a rating that is the aggregate of all these votes, so I can only imagine that the powers that be at TTLG have disabled it already, along with all that other unnecessary stuff like avatars ;)

Amusingly, the "Contacts & Friends" page in the user control panel defaults to displaying avatars. Gee, I wonder why they're all blank?

reputation system ... disabled

We have enough virtual back-padding and backstabbing within a rather small group of sir-post-a-lots as it is. I can only imagine how awesome it must be when some FM author who's only posted in the game forums so far gets to commchat and sees a bunch of guys with a huge reputation built on cock jokes. No, thanks.
Nothing against cock jokes, mind you. But seeing how the tags are being misused I can do without a reputation system.

I don't want a reputation system, just a simple checkbox next to a post.
