No, Temple is chronologically prior to Raiders, per the onscreen date at the beginning of the film.
(Temple 1935, Raiders 1936, Crusade 1938)
Edit: Just saw on the imdb that John Hurt is cast as Abner Ravenwood, so maybe the new movie IS a prequel. Or maybe it's just a flashback.

Or perhaps they'll contrive a reason for Marion lying in Raiders, who knows?
Temple of Doom was a prequel-sequel and indeed, the weakest of the bunch (Last Crusade had the Connery-Ford dynamic and although being extreme light overall, still managed to really have an emotional core) however I like how dark they went with Temple, I loved the whole children-slavery angle and the dark possession of Indy's spirit. That was pretty edgy stuff, back in the day. All three movies occupy a very special place in my heart; as a trilogy, I actually prefer the Indiana Jones trilogy in its separate parts more than the Star Wars trilogy.

Abner could be in a flashback, a reel of home-movie, or footage of an expediton, a news reel, a photo, etc.
An explanation for Marion's lies wouldn't be too hard. She's lying all throughout the movie. Most of the time it's entertaining, or leads to good results or near-good results for her. It's part of her character. And don't forget, she was pissed off at Indy. She wanted to hurt him. She did hurt him. SMACK!
Not too hard to explain. Plus, Abner needed to stay hidden, so maybe she thought he really was dead.
I might have to watch it again.

Same, last time I saw them all was an all-night Indiana Jones fest at a cinema back in my Uni days.
Maybe I'm forgetting something - why would Abner have to stay hidden?
The thing is, if the Ark was Abner's life, surely he would've shown up at some point throughout the movie or Marion would've made some attempt at contact either pre or post the ark being assumed by whomever took it away at the end of Raiders. It just doesn't fit that he'd be alive, so I hope they can at least fashion a reasonable excuse if he does show up - otherwise, flashback is the way to go, which would be doable as Marion still looks pretty good for her age.

I'm completely forgetting what's actually said, but I think Abner probably wasn't willing to risk his life to the extent the Jones's are. He can't keep up with...them. There's also the sequal-itis possibilities Abner was kidnapped, or stuck somewhere and couldn't escape, or he became too obsessed and forgot everybody else...and Marion was given misinformation that he died. Hopefully it won't seem pretentious, whatever they do.

No idea where that came from, do you mean the Ark?

Shit, sorry, I was reading too fast or something. I was thinking about part 4 and the shots they have of that Inca temple and just read right over what you were saying. Part 4 is obviously a sequel that's apparently going to reprise ideas from the first movie, but that's not what you were saying so, oops!
As for the first three ... except for details about chronology (like whether the war was going on), as far as the stories were concerned I didn't think it mattered much whether they were sooner or later in time than each other. They were more episodic.
If it's right that Part 4 is going to reprise a lot and have flashbacks (and the way Spielberg keeps saying he's making this movie just for the fans makes me think) ... whatever else that means, it's going to break the self-contained, episodic trend of the other movies. It will be an odd addition to the set.

(
http://www.indianajones.com/site/index.html) Thread name revised to reflect official title release.
According to AICN this confirms that a singificant portion of Darabont's original script for Indy IV has survived to the production stage.
