never saw the original...was 2 when it was released (no excuse according to my freinds) but this one was good enough to prompt me to go see the first (hopefully soon). Although somehow I'm not expecting the same level of CG;)

This is my favorite review so far:
Quote:
Overall I liked the movie, but there were parts of it that were a little ridiculous. For example, how did all those snakes survive in the Well of Souls for hundreds of years? I doubt there was an abundant source of food in there. Also, Sallah and Indy both lift the giant concrete slab off the Ark by themselves? Ok, sure thing movie.
Also, during the truck chase, which started out pretty cool, it pretty much went too far over the top when Indy climbed underneath the fucking speeding truck and was being dragged from the back of it by his whip all after being shot in the arm. I get that he's a badass, but COME THE FUCK ON.
And that brings me to the worst part, the ending. It would have been ok if the Nazis just decide not to open the Ark because it would go against the wishes of their Fuhrer. They realize Belloq is of no further use to them, so they shoot him in the head. Then they turn around and discover OH NO! Indy and Marion have escaped! Then you could have a kickass action sequence of Indy and Marion running around the canyon guerilla-style and killing all the Nazis, and then have them take the Ark home.
But no, instead we get a cheesy looking special effects montage of some magic jesus ghosts or some shit that decide to kill all the Nazis for some reason, and then the lid of the Ark just HAPPENS to fall perfectly back on it FROM HUNDREDS OF FEET IN THE AIR. I was digging the film up until that point but that was just TOO MUCH. The Ark never should have been opened, it should have been left a mystery.
And that's not to mention the generally shitty effects throughout. Some of the compositing, like when Indy and Sallah are digging at night to get to the Well of Souls?
Overall I give it a 3/5; some good stuff in there but too many unbelievable parts culminating in an unbelievable ending and some cheesy effects keep it from being really great. I only hope if they make a sequel they try a little harder to ground it more in reality.

As I have said several times now it's not the outlandish stunt itself, although of course there are limits there, that makes a scene unbelievable but the way it is handled. You cannot seriously say that the Raiders truck scene is handled the same way as much of the big chase in KOTCK. I'm not saying you're stupid for liking the action in KOTCK or anything, it's great you enjoyed it, I'm just trying to explain why some of us thought KOTCK streched the believability too far in a more illuminating way than 'INDY 4 SUX MORE COX THAN SHIA LAPOOF'.

Come to think of it, I always thought Raiders and Last Crusade had pretty moronic endings, so I guess Crystal Skull can be pardoned for that, too.

Question, why do you all people keep shortening it to KOTCK? Skull starts with an S last I remember, so it's KOTCS...
Ko0K on 27/5/2008 at 05:26
Because subconsciously they have "kock" on their minds...
P.S.: "nerd rage" :laff:
Aja on 27/5/2008 at 05:55
hey I don't have any nerd rage
more like nerd disappointment
And for the record, I thought the end of Raiders was kinda lame and abrupt.
Now show me a bad review of Last Crusade
that, I'd love to see

Moronic in what way? I love how
Raiders, almost the perfect genre film IMO, actually ends in a way that frustrates expectations: no big showdown with Indy winning the day. It shows that while he's the hero, he isn't Superman. He basically fails. I think that makes the film and the character much more interesting.

Indy is love. I was obsessed with the other movies as a child and this one was great, actiony schlock.
I'm by no means oblivious to the kak elements, some of them being bad enough to actually pull me out of the experience completely (gophers, tarzan etc). I guess I'm just not a big enough fan girl to get enraged by these things, and all the Indy movies had silly or jarring parts anyway.
