I don't know how you could compare it to the Thief 2 demo. That was wonderful.
NoOne on 5/12/2003 at 08:21
btw, it seems some stuff in the engine folders are thief3's... prolly something to do with only content differences :)
game is actually really really good
but still, despite all the good story and choices and stuff, that &%#"/!%¤# interface and all those questionable design decisions still piss me off :(
just when i start thinking what it could have been with all that stuff...

The only gripe I got so far is the lack of insta-lethal headshots. Everything else is good, and the story seems much more complex than it was in the original.
Hitting someone in the head causes more damage then hitting them elsewhere. You can't insta-kill someone that way unless you use the sniper rifle (at least I haven't been able to), but I've found this to be true even with melee weapons. I've been having a lot of success using the one non-lethal melee weapon (forget the name, you find it early in the first level) like a blackjack, just sneaking up on people and hitting them once or twice in the head with it before they know what's going on.

This actually has me really excited about Thief 3 now. I think this engine will really lend itself well to that series. Where Deus Ex reminded me of System Shock 2, DX2 seems to have more of a Thief feel to it. I suppose a lot of that has to do with the incredible lighting and the more minimal interface.
I can see how a lot of Deus Ex fans will be disappointed with the feel of this game, but most of the serious Thief players I know (myself included) really enjoyed the demo. I wish I could put my finger on why exactly that is.

I've never posted here before but I just wanted to say thanks for the positive remarks! A lot of comments have been overwhelmingly negative. I too really enjoyed the demo, despite its problems. It did have a very thiefy feel to it. It certainly was fun starting the demo, sneaking past a guard and looting the apartments first thing! I'm not saying I would want Thief 3 to be identical to the DX experience, but it seems worth playing if you like sneaking. I have been a Thief fan for a long time, but I've never played the first Deus Ex (although I did play the demo). I think I'm going to buy DX:IW now.

Yeah, the inability to render water is a big plus. :nono:

I'm still very confused by this whole "inability to render water" thing. The base Warfare engine is perfectly capable of rendering very nice water, complete with dynamic reflections of the environment and reactive z-axis waves.
BUT.
Add that sort of lovely complexity to the OMG DYNAMIC BARREL FIRE (and you know there will be a LOT more firelight in Thief 3 than there is in DX:IW) and you probably have something you need Deep Blue to run.
That's probably the root of it: Dynamic lighting / soft shadows paired with dynamic reflective surfaces = CRAHS YOU

Have fun Causidica ! The story is truly amazing. As soon as I finish, I gotta replay DeusEx1 and then replay DX-IW - what a fun holiday adventure ! BYW, you can find used copies of DX1 pretty inexpensive via amazon now. :thumb:

I like the game. I like the sheer amount of choices you're allowed to make, but by Gamespot revealing that the endings are brought upon in the same way they were in the predecessor, I.E. the last minute, means that these choices likely lack consequence. The level design seems condensed in that even outdoor areas feel cluttered and not terribly outdoorsy. It's similar in feel to the ps2 port of Deus Ex.

Yes, GBM, I got that impression too. The lighting effects are excellent, but the problem seems to lie in the fact that in order to accomodate them with acceptable performance you need to decrease texture resolution, polygon count, and possibly other effects like water. Ultimately, in terms of looks, the playoff simply isn't worth it, but the dynamic lighting is too important to the gameplay (especially in the case of Thief) to ditch.
A dilemma indeed.

It's been stated in a few interviews that they wrote their own renderer.
In hindsight, this seems to have been a very bad decision.
