When we compose a message, at the bottom of the window there are links to increase (and decrease) the area we have to type in.
How long has that been there?

The Increase/Decrease feature has only just arrived. Jellsoft have released a couple of security-fix releases recently, and this was in the latest release two days ago.

Yep, it showed up in vBulletin 3.0.6 which was released 2 days ago (security patch as David said).
It had been in use on the official vBulletin forum for a while, but was finaly added to the release.
On another point, next release of vB is going to be a major release (probably version 3.1), and I've heard it will bring some new goodies. We'll have towait and see tho. :)
