In the heavens, a new Marathon is waiting... - by june gloom

I just spent my lunch break posting about the most depressing movie I ever watched, then I see this title and get super fuckin' excited, and I'm smiling, and then I read it. Ah, fuck.
For the longest time, I hoped for a Marathon remake/reboot. Me and millions of other people probably. I never understood why they let it sit while other classic IPs were getting milked. Now we're getting it, but I don't want to play an extraction shooter. Seems like a waste of an IP that I thought had more value. Or perhaps I'm naive and extraction shooters are now the most profitable franchises?

Stop saying "extraction shooter". It sounds like some kind of alien drug habit.

I had never heard of extraction shooters, so I looked up the term, and here's an explanation.
Quote:
In stark contrast [to battle royale shooters], extraction shooters feature maybe a dozen players per game on a large map, setting them off to collect loot from their opponents or key looting locations. The flow of the game is also much slower, with tactics and strategy favored over pure mechanics. The biggest difference of all lies in the ability to escape the game with your loot, instead of a last-man-standing type deal.
Sounds kinda fun, I guess. And the art style in the trailer is nice. But games that focus on loot tend to feel hollow pretty quickly, and for some reason I've never stuck to any online multiplayer game for more than a few weeks. At least if it's free I can play for a couple hours and see some good graphics.

So, it's more like Hunt: Showdown?
Thematically and mechanically that looked like a cool game, but it's one of the only games I've ever bought and then refunded because I realised just how insanely much work you'd need to put in to get good enough to play it. Losing your character and all their progress every time you die seemed especially harsh.

Hunt Showdown is perhaps one of the best examples of it, but there's also Escape from Tarkov that started the whole thing, a few other games clearly inspired from it, such as The Cycle: Frontier, and a few games that put a somewhat different spin on it with a more cooperative take, like Second Extinction and Deep Rock Galactic.
They are kind of an evolution of survival games like DayZ and Rust.

The art style looks great, but really though they should retitle the game to "Marathon to Studio Closure". Gameplay looks super mid.

What's Marathon without the story?
A very generic early FPS game. That was available for Mac.
Marathon (the original) is noteworthy for two things:
1) Being a FPS game on Mac
2) Using logs to tell the store/provide lore
Beyond that, it's a fairly average FPS game for the time.

Just got sent the trailer elsewhere. Looks nice but other than that? What's the catch?
Whatever happened to June anyway?
