Who says the player character's gender matters? I mean... gas masks, assault rifles, no women for miles... You can see where this is going ;)

I can't think of any other way to get some of my female friends into the series.

Easy. Tell them they get to kill LOTS of male idiots.
;)

If that actually worked there'd be more chicks into video games since that's EVERY game :p

I only played STALKER 1 through once, but I will NEVER forget it. Bought it three times now. Every bit as memorable and important as Deus Ex to me.

Just saw this. I can tell a story. In the original, sometime around just before I got to the Bar area, I wanted to buy supplies and could only think to go back to the opening area shop guy. So I took this loooong hike back to the start, just roughly following the big map expecting to see familiar terrain eventually (& wasn't sure how to get a waypoint since there was no objective to lock-on to). I just kept walking south & south, and then it was getting night and nothing looked familiar. To keep myself occupied I'd loot some houses when I saw them sometimes. But I was getting really lost, and at this point it was pitch black night outside.
Then I saw some compound in the blackness and three soldiers or so standing around its entrance, and thought what the hell. I'm totally lost anyway. May as well pop 'em & loot it. And this is around the start area, so it should be a cakewalk. So I started shooting guards, and the next thing I know there some massive alert and a flood of guards start pouring out of buildings a lot more heavily armed than I expected, and they keep coming. But I didn't want to run. I wanted to stick it out come hell or highwater, at the very least to see what this thing was. It's still pitch black so I have no idea what exactly I'm looking at. I just know for every guard I kill another 10 seem to pop up. And after shooting from a distance, I finally come in & I start running through the buildings shooting everyone. When I'd reach another building, there'd be another swarm coming at me, and it was even darker inside.
I ran out of ammo on both weapons and had to start picking up their guns & ammo. It took forever to clear them all out. And then after a whirlwind massacre, there are the ~40 white dots all around me, I grab some object in a back room (in something like a drawer or safe IIRC) labeled "important military documents", and I knew it was the objective for some kind of quest I hadn't gotten yet. I hadn't really gone in expecting such a massive fight, definitely not in that area, but it was cool I could just stumble into one in pitch black and take it out anyway because why the hell not... Around then the light just started peaking up and I saw the fence & that it was the military base for the entry area for the Zone. I'm just standing around this large military base I just cleared out in pitch black. I didn't even suspect there was anything like that near the start. I thought where you started was as far south as you could go on the map, but clearly I was mistaken. And then I was still miles from the opening shop. But it was an interesting little detour anyway. And I finished the game without ever hearing about whatever quest I'd just inadvertently pulled off.

Lol dema. It's easy to get a little lost the first time you play SoC, Lord knows I did quite a few times when I decided to go exploring. Bad idea, since if the military didn't get me, the mutants did. And forget about travelling at night .... that's when the real nasties come out, imo. ;)

Actually, Sidorovich is probably only about half a mile from the military outpost.
