I think we've just looped back on the discussion -- I'm sure they'd be far more willing to play them if they weren't rubbish.
That always helps, but it's no guarantee. Mixing playstyles is
dangerous - you're not appealing fans of playstyle 1 and fans of playstyle 2, you're appealing to fans of both playstyles 1 and 2. The intersection of fan sets, not the union. Games like Deus Ex thrive on
allowing you to play the game different ways, not in
forcing you into gameplay you'd rather avoid.

One nice thing about lockpicking in Oblivion was that you could either choose to play the minigame, or you could press the "Auto Attempt" button which rolled your skill against the lock for a % chance to either automatically unlock it or break a lockpick instead.

Oblivion got the lockpicking about right, but hoo-boy did they ever fuck up the pursuasion mini-game. That right there is a textbook example of how not to do it. Not only is the interface thoroughly incongruous, the game makes no sense (Why does telling a joke after flattering someone make them happier sometimes, but angrier on others?), it's tedious and has to be played over and over with the same character (even if you win) in order to get their opinion of you up to the required level. Its one redeeming feature was that you could bypass it entirely and just bribe someone, though that could be expensive at the start of the game.
