@bob_doe_nz,
What you describe is exactly the configuration that I had before installing the new drivers, and which I still have. It's not clear to me what could cause the difference in our results. Are you talking about (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory) this EXE? That's what I have.
Yep, thats what I used. I first got thief running to the main menu, when I tried to play the Bafford mission, it went blank. I tried the training level with no problem... :confused:
edit: OK, I just re-downloaded it and didn't apply the CPU affinity batch file fix to it and now it runs fine. :confused:
Can't seem to use XCPU on it either.
Edit2: Screw that, back to the 8x.xx drivers

Ok, Talk is good, but can we see some images please, as i am running the same driver and thief 2 looks just as bad as it ever did.

@biker,
My T2 images with the 7950 GT look exactly the same as they did before with the Russian 84.56 drivers, the drivers I have been using all along. I have posted my images in various places including your threads here and on the Nvidia forum. In short, my images are somewhat crappy, but not nearly so crappy as the 8000 series. :)
Other people in this thread have stated that their images are unchanged.
The author of this thread is vague in his claims for the driver. I believe the only claim intended is that it runs Thief 1, whereas other newish drivers crash T1. Maybe these drivers work for some people, but not for me.

Being an XP SP2 Nvidia 7900GT user who couldn't be bothered to switch drivers every time I wanted to play Thief, I'd taken a looong hiatus (and have not even lurked here for at least a couple of years). But every now and again I'd fire up T1G and T2 to see if they working with the latest drivers, be disappointed, and give up again.
Yesterday I tried again. To my surprise I discovered that T2 seemed to actually work reasonably well with the 163.71 drivers (albeit with the dreadful texturing problems noted by everyone else - but anything is better than nothing). Unfortunately T1G didn't, but I rushed over here anyway figuring I'd spread the good news and discovered, of course, that this was already old hat. :)
That being said, I decided to make a concerted effort to get T1G working. Long story short, I think I may have been able to cook up a generic solution using the Application Compatibility Toolkit. The main issues seem to involve - unsurprisingly - processor affinity and DX thread safety. I *think* that the resulting patch ought to work on XP SP1, SP2, and Vista but I have no means of testing anything other than SP2. It applies equally to T2 so if anyone is unable to run T2 for any reason, this should help them too.
Anyway, if anyone wants to try out my proposed fix (in the form of a 6kb SDB file which is trivial to install and uninstall), drop me a PM. (Sorry, I've no means of hosting it at the moment).
Me, I'm going to finally grab T2X and a ton of FMs! See you in the spring :cool:

I reported above that 163.71 did not work for me. I was wrong. In the course of testing the patches that are being reported, I installed 163.71 again, and it worked with Thief gold and my 7950 GT. I guess that my first install was wrong because I installed 163.71 on top of 84.56 rather than deinstalling 84.56 first. This time I deinstalled 84.56 first, and now Thief Gold plays. :)

hi all. i have been having this problem too, and have updated to the latest drivers (163.71) and still no joy. i have a nvidia 7300 gt. im running on XP SP1.
i found a temporary fix (
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/current/Thief2Fix.7z) here and after changing a line in the .exe i find it works, but there are some gfx errors like the my ui will hide behind walls and objects. i have to look around to try and see my items / stealth bar, which you can imagine is hard trying to sneak looking at the sky. it also made the cutscenes run abit slower.
i tried the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory) FAQ fix but when i put the .exe into my /dir and then double click it, i get a 'no cd in drive' error, when its already in the drive.
i purchased the soldout software Thief 1& 2 double pack if that makes any difference?
any ideas?

Nope, mine still crashes.
Bugger. Nice try though.
XP SP2, Geforce 7600GS, Athlon 64 3200
You know, I wonder if the OpenDark Engine will fix/alleviate this problem...

same for me:did the dual proc stuff (have a e6600) and a 7600gt. No errors, just crashing. Worked just fine a couple a months ago (same box!). Only difference are drivers (for gfx)
And i loooove the thief games, but i don't want to replave WHQL-certified drivers everytime i want to play..
Only t:ds works fine... This is only dark engine related. SS2, t2 and tg don't work...
