Anyone tried this with a 7800GTX already?
I also see two driver versions mentioned here:
Lightningline mentions the official 163.71 but vorob says 163.76 - which could be a beta version.
The newest beta at Nvidia is v163.75, though...

After you selected let 3 D app decide did you remember to press apply ? Is your Thief 2 patched to v 1.33 ?
Of course i pressed apply. "Let 3d application decide" was my default setting, by the way.
You mean Thief 1?
p.s.
erm, gotta upgrade to Vista anyway :tsktsk:

thief 2 never been a problem really, which is fortunate as pretty much all the fm's come out for that version

Probably a type error. The latest WHQL driver is 163.71. I am using T2 with a 6800GT and the game works great on any settings.

Here is the same driver that is working for me. It also plays Bioshock and HL2:Episode 2 flawlessly.

As I said on the thread posted in the FM forum, saying "it works" does not tell the whole story. I guess this means that it allows T1 to play, which is a good thing. However, based on Kerrle's response, it appears that it does not solve any of the rendering problems we have been complaining about in various places, such as biker's thread about (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113501) crappy colors with the 8000 series.

Thief Gold does indeed at least run on my 8600 GTS. I'll test Thief II and take some screenshots today, and report what I find.
Update:Both Thief Gold and Thief II run just fine on my 8600 GTS, but the rendering issues remain pretty much unchanged.

I just installed 163.71 with my 7950 GT (PCI-E 16) and Windows XP SP2. The default setting after installation was "Let 3-D application decide," so I did not change that. Thief Gold failed with a black screen as soon as the T1 game rendering began. Thief 2 works the same as before on the 7950 GT, which is, bad sky, crappy colors on some textures, OK on most textures. I have reverted back to the (
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1744187&postcount=302) magic Russian 84.56 drivers. That particular driver version is the only driver I have found so far that will play T1 and works in SLI mode using a 7000 series card. It also has the old control panel, which I like. I am not running SLI at present, so we cannot blame the failure on that.
If you have a 7000 series card or before and you cannot get 163.71 to play T1, I suggest you try the above. I think it does not support 8000 series, although maybe it would if you modified the INF file, which is accessible in the self extracting archive. I haven't had to worry about that yet.
For those who, like I, need an older driver for T1, I would be curious to know what applications / games fail or look bad with the 84.56 drivers? Why do you need to switch back and forth?
EDIT: On a subsequent install of 163.71, Thief Gold worked for me. I guess I did not install it right the first time. My error was probably that I did not completely de-install 84.56 before installing 163.71.

I tried that on Gold and had the same problem.
Try getting The modified Gold executable, Setting it's affinity to one cpu and try again.
I did and Goldietaff works fine.
Edit: Or not.

Exactly.

@bob_doe_nz,
What you describe is exactly the configuration that I had before installing the new drivers, and which I still have. It's not clear to me what could cause the difference in our results. Are you talking about (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory) this EXE? That's what I have.
