I'm on my second reading of the 12 volume 'History of Middle Earth' books, which is mostly all slight variations of the same story over and over again with commentary by Christopher Tolkien.
I kept wanting it not to end. That's what drove me to read the appendices to the LotR, then the Silmarillion, then 'Unfinished Tales' and 'Letters', and so on. The Silmarillion being probably my favourite.
I loved the Silmarillion a lot, but it was just so damn hard to follow sometimes.
About the LOTR movie, I thought they were great, even though they didn't look AT ALL like I imagined. I imagined Mordor to be more scary and dreadful, and crawling with orcs. The sun would've been blotted out by the clouds and ash moved by the orcs, only giving a dim, gloomy light. Oh well.
And about the whole 'Sauron is a flaming cunt'; that was a big wtf and not-scary-at-all.
I'm also all ok for a 'the Hobbit' movie.

Sorry for the Necropost, but people seemed sort of interested at the time, so I thought they might like to know that Peter Jackson has released a statement saying he won't be making The Hobbit:

This outcome is not what we anticipated or wanted, but neither do we see any positive value in bitterness and rancor. We now have no choice but to let the idea of a film of The Hobbit go and move forward with other projects.
We send our very best wishes to whomever has the privilege of making The Hobbit and look forward to seeing the film on the big screen.
Seems that New Line have some how managed to screw up the most obvious no-brainer decision in the recent history of film-making.
Seems New Line are intent on making the movie anyway, I wonder who'll get the job.

Anyway, I'd just like to point out that aside from MGM spouting this rumour, the word from the Jackson camp is that they're busy with lots of other projects and also, they've just optioned another fantasy series, Temeraire.
That would be interesting to see, I like the Temeraire books; but how on earth can you do a non-animation movie of them?

This is the most dumbass thing I've seen a movie studio try in a long time. Alien Resurrection and T3 come to mind...

But Jackson is to Tolkien what Jean-Pierre Jeunet is to Ridley Scott.

However last week, Mark Ordesky called Ken and told him that New Line would no longer be requiring our services on the Hobbit and the LOTR 'prequel'. This was a courtesy call to let us know that the studio was now actively looking to hire another filmmaker for both projects.

Oh yeah I forgot that bit when I posted.
I'm thinking it's not a Silmarillion movie, since Tolkein gave explicit instructions that the rights to it (in whatever form it existed at his death) were never sold. I think that's the case anyway.

Isn't Silmarillion more of a history of the Middle Earth thing, and not really much of a tie between the two stories? I wouldn't know, I couldn't get myself to finish that book.
Or the first chapter.
