Oh fuck you, The Two Towers wasn't only the best theatrical release of the three but the Extended Edition made it beyond superb and actually raised it above reproach. So fuck you, or I'll set Gollum on your ass.
The Last March of the Ents is, IMO, the most powerful imagery in the trilogy. Let's hug!

Plenty of Tolkien fans can't stand the films and don't have a single nice thing to say about them- the scenery is wrong, costumes and music are no good etc.
Yes but we call those people non-functional.

Seconded, Agent M.

The level of hostility in a thread about fantasy movies frightens me.

I used to post in the Tolkien newsgroups. I stopped when they started calling those who were anti the films 'Bookwraiths' and those who liked the films 'Filmgoblins'. I think the bookwraiths wanted Peter Jackson to die, or at least be maimed for making the films. It was worrying, and I consider myself to be a bit of a Tolkien obsessive- they made me look sane.

The main problem I have with the Tolkienites who can't see past the text isn't that their interpretation of Tolkien's work is different from Jackson's and that they hate him for it; it's that invariably the Tolkienites have virtually no idea what makes for good film. I liked both books and movies and have almost no qualms with the changes Jackson made. My few problems with the movies have nothing to do with the fact that they're not like the books.
There are some aspects of the movies that aren't that great, but there are significant chunks of the book that are nigh unfilmable and I think overall Jackson and crew did a heroic job. There *are* legitimate criticisms to be levelled at the movies but "Tom Bombadil wasn't in it" isn't one of them and complaints like that illustrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different forms of media. You can't have a cast of characters just stand up there and recite Tolkien's words. It would be atrociously bad and anyone who says otherwise doesn't have the chops to be watching movies let alone critiquing them.
Stitch can back me up on this, he's been preaching the word for years.

For what it's worth, I haven't read the book and the first movie was good but the rest are huuuuuurghhh and the last thing I want to see is even longer editions of them.
toliken sux lol

The only thing that I didn't like about the movies was the ending. I was disappointed they didn't have the
scourging of the shire
in it. For me, this was one of the most important parts of the book. I do understand that with that part the movie would have reeeaaaaallly drug on though... I'm a big fan of both the books and the movies. :thumb:

I'm still waiting for a film(s) and/or tv-series of Silmarillion. It would be so cool!

No it wouldn't :(
It'd be like trying to film the Bible including all the psalms, worrying shit at the beginning and the strange parts at the back

Representing those who liked the films just fine but who think the books are stupefyingly dull, poorly-written, and in general a waste of ink, paper, and the energy it took to produce them.
