Interesting choice, though I know as much about The Hobbit as I did about Lord of the Rings until I caught them at the cinema so I guess I'll keep it that way. Del Toro is an interesting choice but he's proven that he can solidly create fantastical settings and he has a past in dodgy action too.

And it seems Jackson and the WETA guys will be supporting him 100%
Hmmm...a sequel to The Hobbit (not LotR), the 60 years that passed between The Hobbit and LotR, interesting.
:)

Del Toro is a safe choice. That said I don't think he will do for 'The Hobbit' what Peter Jackson did for LOTR. I expect whatever he does may well be decent and entirely servicable, but I would like to have seen what Tim Burton might have done with it.
-besides casting Depp as Gollum and H. Bonham-Carter as Lobellia or some role made just for her of course.

Lets only hope he doesn't. The worst thing they could do to the Hobbit would be to overly dramatize it. I re-watched some of the LoTR movies (or parts of them) the other day and I found them not quite so irritating as originally, but the tone still annoys me (regardless of whether that was the only realistic direction or not).
The Hobbit however had an entirely different tone from LoTR. I hope its more light hearted and silly with a few dark parts where needed. I really hope they keep the songs, goofy though they were.

This is the most ridiculous thing you've ever written, heretic. Tim Burton is far more a "safe" choice as far as any major studio is concerned than Del Toro will
ever be.

Well, Burton is commercially safe but creatively not so much, as he'd undoubtedly take The Hobbit off in some Burtonesque direction.
Which is exactly why he would make a horrible fucking director for The Hobbit.
And really, what is it with the internet thinking that Tim Burton should direct everything?

You haven't read many of my posts then have you?
I disagree on both counts..but maybe I'll rethink all of this when I'm a little more clear headed. Please hold your breath.

I blame Hot Topic.

I agree that this is an inspired choice for the Hobbit. However, the material is already written for that movie and we'll all know generally how it goes.
Whats interesting me, is this "sequel" they're bouncing around. We all know that Del Toro is possibly the master of original fantasy movies these days and so i find myself more intrigued about this second movie and the direction it's taken in. Heck, if anything all the tolkein nerds will be ripping it to shreds as to how it fits into established cannon - so thats his real test.
Saying that, as with the LOTR movies i will be there dressed up in my custom-Balrog outfit on day 1!

well I think he would do an amazing job if they ever made a Thief movie
