THIS IS NOT A DRILL; REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL(I was going to include this in my other movie happenings post, but that would be like announcing the return of King Arthur in the fantasy football league thread.)

It's official. “The Hobbit” will indeed be getting the big-screen treatment over the next couple of years.
According to Variety, the “Lord of the Rings” prequel - which the studio hopes Peter Jackson will direct - is one of several big-budget films that the crowd have in the works.
In addition, they're also prepping a fourth “Terminator” movie, and a sequel to the Pierce Brosnan starrer “The Thomas Crown Affair”.
“The Hobbit”, said to be budgeted in the $150-200 million dollar range, will be produced in partnership with New Line.
Interestingly enough, Harry Knowles over at Aint it Cool says he spoke to Peter Jackson today and he knew nothing of the project. "... he did say that he woke up this morning to see that MGM says he's making THE HOBBIT with them, which was strange. He said that as unbelievable as it may be, he's never once talked to any studio, be it New Line or MGM, about doing THE HOBBIT. So, as of today Jackson has not talked to anybody about doing the movie, but he did say he'd like to do it, even though his schedule gets more crowded every passing week. So, if MGM wants to do this thing it might be a good idea to see if Jackson is up for it, no?", writes Knowles.
The pics are all franchises that MGM owns the rights to through its 4,000-title library. The goal is to release two or three tentpoles a year, all of which will be made with financial partners, including Wall Street money or other studios.
CAN I GET AN AMEN?

Peter Jackson doesn't know squat about this? That doesn't exactly bode well.
Things I'm wondering:
Who will play Bilbo?
How will they deal with more than a dozen main characters (the dwarves) who are all very similar?
I can only imagine they'll cut the number down or simply focus on a few and all but ignore the rest.
This is nice news anyway. I'm hoping that they won't have to cut too much, what with the Hobbit being a short book even compared to the Fellowship of the Ring (270 pages against 398)

I'd rather see a miniseries made of The Hobbit than a feature-length film, seeing as how the book is written episodically anyway.

That's basically what Tolkien did. He gave some dwarves unusual characteristics to help tell them apart (Bombur's weight for example) but for the most part, the dwarves didn't have much character depth.

It's scary to imagine MGM doing it without Jackson.
The Hobbit
Starring:
Tom Cruise as Bilbo
Sean Connery as Gandalf
Oliver Platt as Balin
Liam Nesson as the voice of Smaug

Well, the would save money on the special effects needed to make him look short.

You aren't far off- Connery was the first name mentioned for Gandalf back when LOTR was first announced, which made me want to projectile vomit. Of course, one of the casting possibilities for Bilbo (or Frodo, can't remember right now) was, I shit you not,
Danny Devito.
Imagine-
Code:
Frodo stands inside Mount Doom, holding the ring before him. He makes
to cast it into the fire from whence it came, then suddenly stops himself.
He stares at the ring with a lover's greed and suddenly clutches it to his
breast. Pulling it off its chain, he brandishes the ring like a talisman,
and as he claims the ring for himself he is heard to cry-
Frodo: (
in Louis DePalma from Taxi voice) Hey, Sauron! YOU'RE A
LOOOOOSER!
The horror; the horror.
p.s. Christopher Lee had better be the voice of Smaug.
