A mix between the three flash bomb variants shown (original game model, intro cutscene version,
Ambush! cutscene version).
That looks exquisitely snazzy.
The rivets are awfully tiny though, aren't they?
Digital Nightfall on 8/12/2007 at 03:01
No, I love it. That's a fantastic re-imagining.
My only objection, and this is more leveled at the device itself than your interpretation of it, is that it's a little too scifi and not enough steampunk.

Double the size of the rivets and halve their number and I'll have zero nitpicks.
Great job!

I think it looks a little too tall, and too round. Since you took the explosive and gas mines from 5 to 7 sides, I say take the flash mine from 6 to 8, still roundish but not too round (looks like you have 16 now).
Is that one of the lens textures I sent you today?
Digital Nightfall on 8/12/2007 at 04:28
I think that's the old hammer periscope lens.
Nameless Voice on 8/12/2007 at 04:32
The old Hammerite periscope lens was a green blob.
That's the lens from the scouting orb, IIRC.
Apparently an unused version?
Digital Nightfall on 8/12/2007 at 04:37
I meant it was what you were using for the EP periscope before you made a new one. I didn't realise it was a stock T2 texture.

I just wondered what they would look like if the "iron" plates looked a little more like bronze, i.e. not as yellow (?) as the TMA version, but still somehow more steampunk-like, at least in my imagination. Maybe that would also allow to reduce the number of rivets which now suggests that the price for a flash bomb would be incredibly high. Anyway, great work, NV!

Yeah, that's great work.
It's easy not to worry much over authenticity when something looks that good.
Edit (after sNeaksie's "Agreed" post, so he's agreeing just to ^^^): By the way I should say, in my humble opinion, I'd choose NV's flashbomb over the original in any event. I recall situations actually being confused at first looking at the original before I picked it up, questioning which mine it was. It isn't intuitively a flashbomb by sight. NV's is, a very good thing.
sNeaksieGarrett on 8/12/2007 at 17:45
Agreed. If anything, they can still be used as a sort of replacement for people who want it/ fm designers... So even if NV scraps his models due to not looking "original" enough, they can still be used in my opinion as an alternative to the default models. (Not in the object pack, but as a individual download for people, I guess.) Hell, I'd say these models are a big improvement, definitely if you don't pay attention to the little details like most people probably don't. I suppose it depends on the individual: more experienced veteran thief players will say, hey that looks wrong. Newbies will simply say it looks good and not really notice and /or care that it isn't "to the original design". Just my 2 cents.:thumb:
Although, I kinda agree with Wille. For me, the flashmine looks sort of like a ceiling camera or a fire alarm. The hexagonal look seems better. But hey, do want you want, either way, it STILL looks neato. =)
