I never realized shading made such a difference - I never used it on any objects I've made before. I just have
waaaay too much left to learn about all this crap. I need to go back and redo a few probably...
Ok, the original texture looked shit because it actually
was a stone texture lightened up to try and look like metal (just a rough attempt at having somethign close in there) - so good catch, NV. I've made a new one from scratch using a simple gradient and applying some texture effects to it - it still needs some tweaking though, more details and variation probably. NV, if you have a good silver texture feel free to send it along or drop it in when you get this.
Anyway, since Sneaksie mentioned the original poker, here's a shot comparing the original, the new one with better texture, and then the new one again with gouraud - the difference with shading is astounding!

And I know, I need to resize it to be exactly the size of the original. I'll do that before it's done.

Nice work Yandros... Thanks for the comparison shot btw.... i actually havent looked at the firepoker in a long time (from in the game I mean by playing).
I can see the difference with shading. I know this is WIP, but I was thinking that maybe the texture should be tweaked... but hey, you can't please everyone right? Well whatever happens, great work Yandros.;)

Now that I know that about the texture, the jumbled colors in the original poker make a lot more sense . . .
The model looks absolutely gorgeous with the new shading! :thumb::thumb: My suggestion is that the texture should look more gray, more metallic. Right now it looks like porcelain. Very pretty, but not very practical. Even if it held up such a light color would need to be cleaned constantly.
Perhaps the detailed parts of the poker shouldn't be so close to the business end; if the one by the tip was further back it would stay a lot cleaner. Our fire pokers are never clean that close to the tip, it seems like if you made a fancy poker, it'd be fancy where it would be cleaner. Of course, all these people have servants to clean them . . .
Here I go rambling again, arg.

You mean, a silver fire poker that conducts so much of the heat of the fire that you'd burn your arm off is ever practical? ;)
What the model really needs, even though it's deviating a bit from the original, is a padded handle to stop the user from burning himself.
I agree that the front decoration should be a little farther back, away from the tip.

In my opinion the handle part looks much better without shading (even without a proper texture it looks detailed). Can you show how it looks with shading on the tip and engraved parts only :)?

That's probably the powder coating. :sly:
Would a fire poker that is regularly used remain a constant color near the tip? I think that the heat exposure over time would change the color and cleaning won't solve the color change.

Would Lord so-and-so (or is it Ramirez?) really use his "prize firepoker" to actually... poke fires? Or would it be more decorative than functional? Like the ceremonial sword over the fireplace... they're nice and shiny and not nicked because they've never actually seen any action. Would Ramirez's (?) prize poker actually be in shiny brand-new condition? Just a thought...
Yandros on 9/10/2007 at 00:46
That's my take on it, it's called "Prized Fire Poker" because IMO it is never used. It is a loot object in most cases after all.
Wille - I can try that but will have to apply a different texture to the tip than the shaft, I was planning on doing that anyway. Perhaps the tip (above the top deco) could be darker, like an enameled iron? Although, I shall probably move that deco down as was suggested already. Personally I much prefer shading on the deco parts, and probably the tip. Whether to use it on the shaft or not depends on if you want it to appear round or polygonal.

Yandros, you should take a minute and straighten out the hook.
remap it the same and then rebend the hook. It would get rid of the two weird stripes and shape them with the hook.
Or ummm, uv edit I guess.
Looks good though, I also agree that it probably isn't used. However, while there is a nice new hook model it could use a few skins, rusty and dirty ya know :D
