I was talking to anyone that knew the answer to my question. I dl'd some of those files as I thought I could convert them as smeshes but most of them are .3ds files which won't open in Max 5.1.
Would a new AI for T3Ed have to be made and exported in Max 5.1 as with smeshes and matlibs or can you do that in any program?

Pass it in anim8or before (import-export as .3ds).

Only with that fucking program for exporting, no other chances. But you can quite build it with any other program, if after it will be compatible with 3dsmax 5.1.

How can you know which programs are compatible with 5.1? I have tried opening some max scenes and it wouldn't allow it.

Shadow - you can do any model with any modelling software, as long as you can save/export it to a .3ds file (export selected). Sometimes there might be a problem with max 5.1 reading these files if you e.g. use some quite modern software. And one more thing: do not open max scenes, export the models one by one.
I remember that Ziemanskye imported such model to 3ds max 8 (or 9?) first, and then exported it again to make the file readable by max 5.1. I got 3ds max 8 trial only but I already tried exporting some tree models with it to .3ds file, max 5.1 read it without any problems.

Only trying to import :)
Try to work with other programs and export in .3ds, then import that file with the 5.1. I know, it sucks, but it's the only way possible, since those lames that builded T3Ed didn't released any update :(

So you must export as a .3ds file then convert it to .max in anim8or.

p.s. What are the dimensions of a regular DS AI (like a guard for example) in Max? And how many polys does it have?
