mage's guild from someone in punabi. I crossed the bridge and passed the dwarven ruins. Where the hell is the lake im supposed to find? There is no good road after passing the ruins.

You're correct, the directions suck on this quest. Keeping going straight till you hit the valley and turn left ( I think ). It's out in the middle of no where, in a caven door, on a bump near the road. If I remember correctly there is a road sign.

Yeah, that lake's quite a ways' east past the bridge over the Foyada Mamaea. If you find Marandus, you're within spitting distance; if you have Suran on your map, the lake's a bit upstream of it.

If you mean "the river northwest of Suran" when you said "the river north of Suran", then yes. You can travel up that river (north) until you reach the lake; you can swim, water walk, levitate, whatever.
