I want to creat a new thief website. What is the most reliable web host out there? I dread having my site deleted without my consent if I were to leave for a few months. So who should I go with?

I use godaddy, and have had a generally good experience. But I've heard some bad stories about them as well, in particular that their web server setup is very inconsistent. Some customers are able to run things like forums without an issue (like me), while others find it impossible because of the server setup - I'm speaking specifically of phpbb here. But I'd still recommend them for hosting based on my personal experience.

I also use GoDaddy for the Southquarter site, and it's been good for the most part. They offer a couple dozen free apps like Wordpress/phpBB/Drupal where all the setup is automated and painless, which is nice. I do get some speed issues occasionally, but nothing that bad. Very reasonable price wise also.

I use Hasweb for my site(s). Both domains are registered with godaddy and the sites are hosted on Hasweb. In 5 years I have had only one issue with them (temporary suspension due to a mix up when they updated their billing system) but it was sorted out quite quickly and painlessly. They have good customer support.
They also come with the free apps that rea installed and updated with a click or two. Wordpress, phpbb, etc. And I find their pricing/packages quite reasonable, specially for all they offer.
Hope that helps.

GoDaddy still a good bet? Or have things changed since 2008?

If you speak German I can recommend Suleitec.de. I've been hosting my sites and the sites of my clients on their servers for the last 9 years. They always give speedy personal service and will go the extra mile to make you happy. They have an impeccable uptime, are fast (most of our visitors are from overseas) and provide a professional customer backend incl. phpAdmin interface. And they handle domain registration for you, included in all their plans.

I use GoDaddy and have done trouble free for some years now. My only gripe with them is not allowing files to be kept outside the public root directory (at least not without paying extra) which is certainly not the end of the world, though is something I like to do when it comes to php files.

I use (
http://www.hostgator.com) hostgator for both my sites since 2004 or so, and I've never had anything to complain about.

Huh, since this topic is recent, and a lot of people are saying to use GoDaddy - don't.
A while back, I was idly discussing the idea of buying a website with a friend, who idly typed namelessvoice.com into their "is this domain in use?" search box to check if it was taken (IIRC he uses them for hosting). At the time, it was free.
Again, idly, I just happened to look today if the site existed, and it seems that GoDaddy have bought it and are now cybersquatting it, with the offer to purchase it off them for presumably exorbitant amounts of money.
A quick search corroborated this. GoDaddy log every domain name that people check for, and then register it if they think there's a chance that they can later sell it to you at an exorbitant price.

Domain name squatting at its worst. That sort of thing ought to be illegal - it's certainly immoral.
I have no real intention of buying the domain, so, yeah, they've just wasted a few dollars of their money by camping on it, but imagine if I actually wanted it now - I'd have no choice but to buy it from them, or try to fight them on it. There is a resolution policy to evict domain name squatters, but from what I under it's more for businesses or peoples' names, and I don't exactly have a trademark on my username.
