Good God, nobody expects you to hand out money to everyone who asks; you'd go broke. Give something once in a while and more importantly, keep a humane and compassionate attitude--understanding that these are just HUMAN BEINGS with serious problems, and there but for the grace of god, etc.-- and don't say or think horrible things about them. That's enough.

It doesn't particularly make me feel good, or that I've made a difference. It makes me feel depressed, as does your post. How arrogant you are in your good fortune.

guilty middle classers who wish to "feel good" and like they've "made a differenece" by giving a quarter to some mental deficient to support his meth habit
I just want to go on record as saying that I fully support ANYONE's meth habit.

Just not monetarily--directly, I mean? Or are we talkin' methane?

A local charity realizes that it has never received any donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The director calls him, hoping to get a contribution.
“Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you haven't given a cent to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?”
The lawyer replies, “First, does your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?”
Embarrassed, the director mumbles, “Um...no.”
“Or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?” The stricken director begins to stammer out an apology but is interrupted. “ Or that my sister's husband died in a car accident,” the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, “leaving her penniless with three children?!”
The humiliated director simply says, “I had no idea...”
“And I never gave them any money, so tell me, why in the hell should I give any to you?”

there but for the grace of god, etc
For some of them this is true and although one can afford a certain amount of sympathy...
It's like the argument that someone who flunks out of school and lives off state benefits all their life never having put any demonstrable effort into getting a job is just made that way and there but for the grace of god, etc. Is anyone
really lazy, or are they just built that way and thus unable to put in effort?
jtr7 on 6/3/2008 at 23:18
Many are built that way. Not all brains are suited for all tasks. People are naturally drawn to their specialties, and can branch off on related tangents. Some people lack the social skills or have cluttered thoughts and are unable to meet the demands placed upon them by an employer. Hoplelessness and depression when 100% effort is never enough makes the drastic decision easier to make. And the longer one is unemployed and unable to overcome the internal obstacles, the more likely he/she will never be able to gain real employment.
And still others have what the rest would call a syndrome if they could get past the shallow and uninformed "lazy" label. Really, these people will never be team players doing any old work, and you wouldn't want to be their coworker. They ain't right in the head, but they are otherwise harmless, just not good with people, or organization, or ritual. Greed guarantees homelessness where there are people who cannot meet the employers' demands and are treated like crap by everybody who can.
And there are those in all tiers of society that enjoy the hell out of taking from others. They are the cons, and those who feel they deserve what others have because it was wrongfully attained, those who neurologically have no empathy, those who have zero reason to NOT acquire what they haven't earned.
Then there are those that society fully recognizes as the mentally ill. We don't know what to do with...them.

I support it on the grounds of Natural Selection. Want to start making drugs, with a high probability of blowing yourself up? Go right ahead.

Thief13X, you're just a fuckstick in general, why worry about the specifics of it? Look at you, you fucking narcissist - worrying about yourself and what people think of you in the same breath as talking about the poor. get out
