I'm a bastard... - by Thief13x

I denied somone food today, a built black man probably in his 30's sitting on the curb by the gas station and who said he was hungry and asked if I would buy him something to eat.

Now, before you start tearing into me about how inhumane I am, I am going to mention that in this town, simply walking every day (3 or 4 times) from my apartment to class, I could literally spend a paycheck on people asking me for money, food, gas, cigarettes, beer, but mostly hard cash, thats honestly how much I get asked.
While I technically have money available and even in my wallet, i'm in debt tens of thousands of dollars and the money that is available is 8% interest, which is why I'm try to never use it. I've tried telling people I don't have money and the response is that they usually start begging, literally. So now I ignore them, don't even look at them.
Am I a bastard? they probably think so

Charity is not a requirement for rich or poor. Giving someone food or money randomly is not that great either. Why did you give just him food? Why you chose him? There are probably more effective ways to help, so did you do it just to make yourself feel better?
This is why I tend to think it's the goverment's job to help people to sustain some kind of a basic wealth-level.

If you give them money, they spend it on booze. The majority of them do anyway. You offer to give them food, bet they'd bitch about it, and want the money.

I'm a bastard...
Your mother might have something to say about that.
On the other hand you don't really know for sure, do you? :ebil:

Whether or not Thief13x gives money to panhandlers does happen to be quite the divisive hot-button topic these days.

Your bastardness reminded me of two things that came up surprisingly easy:
(

(

:p
Anyway, you don't owe them anything. They have no idea how much you may already be giving to charity that doens't involve begger-handouts on the street. I avoid them too -for one thing I am probably to paranoid that the exchange won't go well and I don't want to try it. Though I have given change here and there over the years. Just very seldom under those circumstances.

Well I don't know... do you have a track record of unintelligent support for the administration whose idiot policies have made this sort of destitution commonplace?
Well I guess that settles it. You're a bastard alright.

When I was working nights in downtown New Orleans, I was frequently asked for money while waiting for the streetcar. I heard some incredible stories as to why I should give it. There was only one time I gave anyone money. It was around 8AM on a Sunday morning. A rough looking guy came up to me and said, "Hey, lady, can you spare me a dollar. I really need a beer." I rewarded him for honesty with $2 & watched him go straight to the bar across the street. I smiled all the way home. I know exactly how he was feeling.

Haha, have to give that bum points for honesty. If they all did that, they'd probably get the money.

When I was a truck driver, I was making a delivery of a bunch of large boxes to a store without a loading dock. So I had to carry them to the end of the trailer, hop out, grab them, and take them in one or two at a time. I came out of the store and some guy asked me for money. I told him I'd give him 10 dollars if he hopped up in the trailer and shuttle boxes from the front to the back. He said he wasn't interested and walked away. It would have only taken him about 5-10 minutes. That's like $60-$120 an hour. I stopped giving people money a long time ago when I realized I have enough trouble getting my own money. But if they wanna help me out in some situation like that, I don't mind paying a little more than reasonable wages.
