I think metal on the whole is a joke
that hurts me good sir
also Scorpions - Sails of Charon is absolutely fucking essential listening if you want to know about metal, Rock me like a Hurricane not so much.
Zappa in a few words, maybe like Groucho Marx goes mad jazz/rock

Agree with PigLick, Sails of Charon is mandatory.
As for insane jazz, check out (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMGr1l9vRfA) John Zorn's Naked City. Picture a saxophone forcibly and unconsensually penetrating a drum. Listen to it all the time when I play TF2.

On the one hand I agree with you, on the other hand sometimes a block approach is better. I mean, obviously if I were talking to someone person-to-person I'd introduce them slowly, such as my Eurodance friend, find out what she likes and doesn't like and work from there. (She doesn't go for death metal, usually, but likes Devin Townsend- so results do vary.) But for a
forum? Who's got that kind of time? I mean come on, I don't see you complaining over in the Teach Dethtoll Jazz thread that demagogue was going too far by giving me about 20 different artists- and I'm certainly not. No, in this case I took the time to pull samples off Youtube for an overall approach for the new listener to "shop" from, thus finding something he likes. There's a time and place for either approach.
Also lol "self-righteous seriousness"
Well in an internet forum setting its pretty much impossible, what I was talking about is a person-person kind of thing. You at least need some form of direct 1on1 conversation.
That said, your list is freaking massive, but you did a good job of it by providing links, and that obviously took some time and work so thats to be commended. I might even go through it now that its been made so easy.
I do wonder sometimes about people who listen to like 1000 bands from one genre. Nothing wrong with it exactly, but I have a hard time getting into anything so hard that I literally have 100 albums for the same thing (I know it isn't "same" but of any genre)

I don't think Earth is metal. I listened to Hex again today and it's really more like... ambient rock. Their guitars aren't even that distorted.
edit - didn't realize they were in the nonmetal category

Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus - mostly because it has the best versions of The Who - A Quick One (While He's Away) and Jethro Tull - Song For Jeffrey. It's a "live" album, i.e. most of the music was pre-recorded and the vocals were done live (which is really obvious if you watch the Who perform, as Pete knocks a mic stand over and stops playing for several bars while his guitar and his guitar's magical overdub keep going).

Yeah I wouldn't really call 'em metal nowadays. Metal-related, sure, but definitely not metal.

I can't say I feel comfortable talking about recommended "must own" albums for a couple of reasons, top of the list being that I'm a fairly prolific music pirate, secondly I'm a huge appreciator of music in general but not big on albums per se (I commit the Greatest Hits of... crime several times in my list below) and can't really speak to a Stitch-level on why I like certain music and so on.
All that said, what Duckeh wants, Duckeh gets, and my list will contain a fair few on it from prior posts (unsurprisingly, given the nature of the discussion) as a "classics" listing and then I'll give personal reccs.
Classics that I play often
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks, Best of 1964-1971
The Best of the Doors
Legend - The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Nirvana - Nevermind
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon / Division Bell
Best of Sting and The Police
Personal Favourites
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights / Antics
Metallica - S&M
Air - Moon Safari
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f#a#∞
Best of Blue Öyster Cult
Muse - Absolution
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
Sting - Brand New Day
The Postal Service - Give Up
Buena Vista Social Club
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Soundstracks
187 OST
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin OST
Grim Fandango OST
Blues Brothers OST
The Last of the Mohicans OST
Top Gun OST (yes, seriously)
The Shawshank Redemption OST
Probably missed a fair few here and there but that's all I have the energy for on a Sunday afternoon.

Is that GSY!BE album as good as Lift Your Skinny Fists?
Scots Taffer on 23/11/2008 at 08:10
Skinny fists is more of their complete momentum gathering insanity and probably offers a good example of where it's a more coherent album than f#a#∞ but I prefer the latter anyway because of some of the tracks on there.
Just as an aside, I absolutely abhor metal/thrash/cookie-monster-finnish-pagan-folk-metal whatever, which is why you'll never find any in my collection and I won't ever be tempted by it. :p
