You mean his entire discography?
Also previous post updated.

I don't think listening to doom metal vs black metal is quite what BEAR meant when he suggested you diversify.
Borrow some CDs from your faggy eurodance friend!
Also: your METAL LIST is utterly ridiculous and inappropriate for this thread but it is a decent jumping off point for metal virgins looking to see what's out there, and for that you should be applauded. I think metal on the whole is a joke and yet I fully plan on giving some of your links a fair listen tonight.

Well, I do listen to things other than metal. Country, jazz, electronica, dark ambient, so on and so forth. Metal just happens to be the genre I have the most experience in.

I'm sorry, I stopped paying attention when I saw Rush and The Scorpions on your \m/METAL\m/ list.

Rush is on (
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=1206) Metal-Archives and are one of the progenitors of the entire fucking genre. Anyone who tells me Rush isn't metal can go listen to Robert Fripp because they don't know what they're talking about.
Same goes for the Scorpions.

I've come to realize that anyone can be made to like anything, but they have to be introduced right. Telling them "listen to any of these 40 albums" and you guarantee to turn them off. I have a friend who used to only listen to horrible euro-pop forest sounds techno music, and I gradually introduced him song by song to stuff he hated. He actively hated most of the stuff I listened to, and would be a snob about. I would send him a single song here or there, based on what I knew he could handle, letting him get used to it. I recently got him up to listening to and liking viking death metal, which was a chore.
People are so fucking daft at stuff like that. Its like people who suggest flcl as a good intro to anime. I feel fairly certain I could get anyone into anime by knowing a little bit about them and picking out what they could take in what order. And of course I don't just mean anime and metal, I dont really watch anime anymore and don't listen to that much metal, but I think its possible for almost any type of thing if done right. Most people just assume other people should like what they like, which is so stupid really.

dethtoll - Ah, a very extensive list. Will poke at the links to see what goes down :)
Again, thank you all for their contributions (either by suggesting X or Y artist/album/genre or merely by discussing about music in the thread).
Also...someone describe Zappa in a few words, plz.

This is not "fun" metal like the kid who likes the Hives and System of a Down thinks metal should be
I spit out my sippy cup on this one. Considering I've raised kids older than you and am nothing but gristle and sinew at this point I enjoyed it immensely.
It's true too. I am a kid and will wrest every morsel of fun from the jaws of self-righteous seriousness. If I ever have to fight to the death I hope to do so laughing. But I don't think metal should be anything. Give everything a chance and if it doesn't touch you move on to what does.

On the one hand I agree with you, on the other hand sometimes a block approach is better. I mean, obviously if I were talking to someone person-to-person I'd introduce them slowly, such as my Eurodance friend, find out what she likes and doesn't like and work from there. (She doesn't go for death metal, usually, but likes Devin Townsend- so results do vary.) But for a
forum? Who's got that kind of time? I mean come on, I don't see you complaining over in the Teach Dethtoll Jazz thread that demagogue was going too far by giving me about 20 different artists- and I'm certainly not. No, in this case I took the time to pull samples off Youtube for an overall approach for the new listener to "shop" from, thus finding something he likes. There's a time and place for either approach.
Also lol "self-righteous seriousness"
