If you had to lose... - by PraetorJudis

If you had to lose a gameplay element in
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss, what would that element be?
Classes? Skills? Armor? Weight restrictions? Ranged weapons?
Feel free to pick more than one thing you could live without, but set an order of importance if you could.
I'm just trying to prioritise a project I'm in the planning stages on.
Thanks in advance!

There are ranged weapons in Underworld??!
You mean magic wands? Ha! (well, OK, they can come in handy)
You mean slings? Har! Har! Har! (useless!)
So I think I wouldn't miss ranged weapons.
About weight limitations, I could do without but that wouldn't be realistic. But I hate when this limit is too tight, like "shit! why didn't I chose a warrior at the beginning? Now I can't wear this full set of plate armor".

Yeah, I never found the ranged weapon to be terribly useful in UW. I actually hope to improve on that element of the game with an idea or two I had though...
How many of you rely on the compass in the HUD?

Hm. Three days, one reply. I suppose I should give it a full week before I start whining about the lack of response...

It depends on the game.
But in UW it wasn't of great use because I prefered to look at the map to know exactly where I was.
But "almost useless" certainly does not mean "useless"! There must have been a couple of times where it came in handy. For exemple in 2 worlds of UW2: the Zyrglub's (I've forgotten the name but I'm sure you understand) and the one with the knight ghosts.

I very rarely use the compass. If its quick to design for ur tc then keep it in but if it'll thake time it might not be worth it as the map is better

I can't really break it down and envisage what the game would be like without a given aspect. Also, most things I remember about the game, I remember because they were useful/cool things (it's quite a while since I played) so my mind isn't pointing out any particularly useless features.
It's a difficult question, so I think there's a good reason not many people have responded :/

Oh my, I didn't intened to pose a stumper.
Well then... Let us presume Shadowcat is correct, and turn the question around to see if that makes it easier.
What feature from UW1 do you remember being the most impressed by?------------------

A lot of, man !
- the first automap, on which you could write to
- you can repear yourself your weapons and armor
- you can talk with a gob or a troll ... and buy some objects to them
- lights
- physical engine !
- the first real 3D engine
- and the most important : the plot : you really feel alone (in the dark), YOU ARE in 'jail'. UW2 for instance, was a bit too linear for me... You really feel inside this world, you really use the object there (and even build a fishing pole...).
- ...
that's all for now...
P.S. : I really enjoy this 'inside' view !
P.P.S. : Crossbow was a long range weapon... but that's true not often usefull...
