Because if you're in the UK it might not be such a good idea.
I find myself getting outraged more and more with the idiocy that seems so pervasive in this country. I know that gun laws are very different in the US and I doubt that something like this would happen there, but I've no idea about the rest of Europe.
Here's a link to the story anyway. A guy found a shotgun and two cartridges in his garden and handed it in to the police. He's been charged and found guilty of possession of a firearm which in the UK means a
mandatory 5 year sentence.

Its not on BBC, The Times or the Guardian websites yet but I saw a report on the BBC TV news about it.

FFUUUUUUU??
The police here are supposed to be cracking down on gun crime. How is this helpful at all? If I find a gun in the street you can forget me letting the police know. I suppose they'd rather some random found it and popped some other random in the face with it than have it handed in.

Oh, there is more about it here:

Well, its the same here in Austria or Germany - a gun in someones lawn does not mean the person owning the lawn owns the shotgun. HOWEVER, if you touch the gun, ammo and carry it around ( to the police), congrats, you just turned yourself into a criminal.
You are not allowed to touch anything you found, call the police and let them carry away guns, bombs or whatever you are not allowed to touch, laws dont give a fuck about your true intentions.
Dumb laws made by dumb people lead to dumb results.... :nono:

Well, that's mandatory sentences for you. That's what happens when politicians dictate sentencing policy. Don't blame me, I didn't elect them.

Though to be fair no matter how many times the Lib Dems try to revise their tax plans it always ends up pandering to the less well off (read, the majority oh just for votes? noooooo couldn't be) and punishing those that have worked really hard and just made it to "comfortable". An anti-meritocracy, if you will. I shudder to think what they would do to our laws if they got in. brrrrrrrrrr

to be fair to the civilized world, England is essentially Bizzaro World so what happens there can't be expected to generally occur in normal places

I don't know exactly what you guys are all up in arms about. This championing of stupidity is ridiculous.
The government passed a law, and this man violated it by taking the weapon into his possession. There is no excuse for ignorance, and this man deserves his sentence simply for not paying attention to the law.
demagogue on 12/12/2009 at 22:09
Haha... With a law like that, if you find a gun and then a police officer approaches you, you'd have a better chance of escaping jail time by shooting him than giving it to him peaceably! WTF indeed.

*just when I had restored some faith in humanity*
On the personal side, I am not covinced, that there's someone out there with even more hilarious luck then me.
