If the new Thief's stealth is as much fun to play as Dishonored's stealth... - by Thirith

Renzatic, the forward dash ability basically "allows Garrett to rapidly scoot forward and bridge narrow strips of exposed areas undetected" which I highly doubt is going to be something that you may only do on rare occasions. Focus ability is actually something that you can use everywhere, combat, loot finding, lockpicking etc but is a finite resource which you will be given opportunities to stock up on. 3rd person takedowns as far as I've read is something that you can do when you are vertically above an unsuspecting enemy. All of these will change the gameplay of Thief since it allows an easier playthrough of the game.
No more worry of standing in a well lit corridor, just press the forward dash button in order to quickly hop to a shadowy place instead of that apprehension that the guard may actually turn his back and spot you. No more worry of guards looking up when you are crawling above them, just press vertical takedown button to silence the guards instead of the tension when you actually jump down and have to quickly take them out before they notice you. Oh shit! Another guard hears you and now facing 4 guards, just press focus ability button to quickly dispatch all of them out instead of the danger we face and may have to reload the game when we die. Running through melee style may not be easy but its definitely easier compared to the previous Thief games.
And the objective only updates and pops up in the previous games when you find a new piece of information or when the plot changes and the objectives no longer apply. Normally, we had to find our way to get through a certain problem, through an eavesdropped conversation or a particular readable.
The concern here is that objectives start popping up telling you what you can do and kill the spirit of exploration and figuring out things yourself. The example here is given from the Thief preview which I got from the article: "We're told in the final game we'd be able to subdue Eastwick before the alarm's sounded and escape without suspicion, but during our demo we're doomed to contend with alerted guards. As soon as Garrett's presence is rumbled an optional quest objective flashes up, like Dishonored, to highlight that the building's opium pumps can be sabotage to poison the brothel's air supply." I just hope that the new Thief game allows to give us enough time to work out our own solutions before getting that direction push to a viable solution. In this case, it could be easily fixed when Garrett stumbles upon readable about how the opium pumps operate or the dangers of when the opium pumps get a leak and even then, the optional objective popping up may not be necessary, with the general objective already there as "Escape the place using any means."

I'd be fine if the stealth was a bit more fast paced and movement based ala Dishonored. Thief was always about atmosphere more than gameplay to me. To be honest with you, I personally thought that the stealth could get boring in Thief. It was ridiculously easy to blackjack any enemy, and if you played it ghost style, then you'd usually end up spending a lot of time sitting still doing nothing waiting for guards to move along. It could be fun to start with, but imo after you looked around a bunch and lost the thrill of exploration, the game could often become as boring as waiting for a stop light to turn green. Heck, even Doug Church admitted that it might have been cool if he'd made Thief more fast paced. Personally I think it would be cool if they changed the system a bit while still making combat a secondary option.

I hate how much this game is being compared to Dishonored, tbh, by both fans and journalists who've previewed the game alike. Now we even have a Blink like ability. It seems like after 4 years of experimentation and development hell, the devs just decided instead of making Thief a AC clone, we'll just make it a Dishonored clone. Some of the screens look similar, the plot is very similar, and the more game mechanic info we get, that's starting to sound similar as well.
Thief was supposed to influence Dishonored, not the other way around. I hope in the end the devs decide to either make this game unique enough that it won't be a "just like" game at release, or even better, get back to it's roots and make it a true Thief game.

While I enjoyed Dishonored for what it was, I wouldn't like the stealth system in Thief 4 to be like it, mostly because Dishonored's stealth is very bare bones in comparison.
Dishonored has a light and shadow system that feels very superfluous, since barely any shadows exist in the game, and the ones that are around don't really hide you since you need to be far away from guards for it to even work. It also has bunch of convenient waist-to-chest-high barriers you can stay behind to hide from guards. In addition, the sound isn't very well done, since you can't really use it as an indicator for guard positions or the sound of your own footsteps like you could in the Thief games.
I will say though that one thing Dishonored does pretty well is movement in terms of climbing obstacles and crouching under tables. It has some sort of system where you'll crouch lower than crouch stance if you get under something, and any ledge you're near that makes sense to climb up is done pretty easily.
By comparison, the Thief games were a bit iffy on platforming, especially in Deadly Shadows. If anything were to come from Dishonored, I'd say some of the climbing and ducking would be welcome. Other than that, I'd like for the stealth to be like the older Thief games, or if stealth games in general can be taken into consideration, something like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory's stealth would work well in a Thief game, especially with the ability to mask your own noise within the ambient noise.

If the new Thief's stealth is as much fun to play as Dishonored's stealth...
What, the game is out already and we can compare it to Dishonored? What did I miss?
Really, I fail to see the purpose of this kind of threads other than looking for something new to bitch about.
I mean no offence, but I find it quite frustrating to see many of you continously looking for something negative to say about this new game which HAS STILL TO BE RELEASED and passing judgement worthy of a pissed Hammerite armed with a torch.
Yes, this game seems to have less and less in common with a Thief game we would like to see, but the real problem is that you're bitching now, over ANYTHING, and when it's finally out, MOST OF YOU WILL BUY IT ANYWAY. So what's the point?
Then, please, tone down the complains a bit, as I loved this forum once and lately it become more and more similar to general steam forums, full of angry users.
It simply does not feel like a place of intelligence, moderation and fine taste it used to be.

It's funny how you talk about other people looking for excuses to say something negative about the game, while your very reason for even posting here is to find an excuse to talk negative about other people on this forum.
How about you actually make a point pertinent to the topic instead of bitching about what you don't like? The intent of the OP was clearly one of neutrality, so stop acting like there was an undertone for negativity being set up just so you can bitch about it.
Fallen+Keeper on 11/4/2013 at 00:19
Clearly it's not about this single topic. And since the topics full of negativity are all over the place I simply had to choose and I chose the one I found to be the most pointless.
jtr7 on 11/4/2013 at 00:22
Then it's not worth your negativity. Everyone's bitching about something or someone. You are in the bitching club, not outside it, and everyone believes their platform is righteous. Make it count.
Fallen+Keeper on 11/4/2013 at 13:32
Yeah, I know, so now I am bitching about the people who are bitching. :cheeky:
Predictable. Now this thread became even more pointless.

Parts of the thread are pointless. There's some gems in here to loot.
