Took Trebonius up on his offer to fight in the Arena and killed him, how can I finish Skink's quest to give him that letter?

I don't think you can. It's an either/or thing- either you gain Archmage-ship through killing Trebonius, or by the letter route. It's your choice- how bloodthirsty do you feel today? And do you want his nice staff?

Hmm.. I did take up the offer to fight in the Arena, but I was only a Wizard at the time, so I only was promoted to Master Wizard. So now I'm stuck with this letter, and thinking I screwed up... *shrug*

That's a bug, unfortunately. If you're on the PC version you could use the console:
PCRaiseRank "Mages Guild"

Also... you might want to reload an older game and become Archmage through Skink's letter, which means you don't have to kill Trebonius, or wait until after you've completed the main quest to become Archmage.
True, you don't get his uber-cool amulet and staff, but after you complete the main quest, Trebonius gives you another one of his wackass assignments... this time, you have to kill all the heads of the House Telvanni. Fun!
Along those same lines, for anyone who cares: If you're in the Morag Tong, don't kill the Grandmaster, or become Grandmaster yourself, until after you've completed the main quest. Some more fun assignments against key people happen after you've finished the main quest. Dunno if everyone knew that or not, but thought it'd be worth mentioning.

Thanks for the code Myoldnamebroke. :)
Zaphod, I would, but I don't have any old save games... just one file that I keep overwriting.

You're welcome :)
It's probably a good idea to keep multiple saves, or even just save at important points. You never know when something horrible might happen to your quicksave (especially given that Morrowind is crazily buggy), or you might save instead of load while falling off a cliff, or any other number of unlucky things.

I tend to save often, but always over the same save file. I don't know why I chose to do it that way, I had about a million save files when I was playing Aracnum... :o
